DUTY AND HONOR

Donald R. Fox

It is my personal observation that many in our present times do not recognize what duty and honor are. Further, it is obvious that the masses could care less about what duty and honor involve. Some may remember the 1963 speech of General Douglas MacArthur at West Point, where “Duty, Honor, Country” was the heart of his speech. If you never heard his speech, take several minutes to enjoy and learn from his remarkable discourse.

It is not a mistake when we hear many declare the United States of America is a Christian nation, and our roots are imprinted by Judaic/Christian principles. Our founders recognized the Word of God; the Bible was the soundest, most stable foundation for our new nation. Our money still has the motto “In God We Trust."

DUTY AND HONOR ARE BIBLICALLY UNDERSTOOD AND PRACTICED CHARACTERISTICS.

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 KJV)

“Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not.
So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.” (Luke 17:9-10 KJV)

“But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:” (Romans 2:10 KJV)

“To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:” (Romans 2:7 KJV)

“Duty then is the sublimest word in the English language. You should do your duty in all things. You can never do more, you should never wish to do less.” Robert E. Lee (1807 – 1870)

“All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in single words: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.” Sir Winston Churchill (1874 – 1965)

End Note: An increase of citizen lawlessness and the like are evidence of a lack of knowledge concerning one's duty and honor. A deficiency of duty and honor will destroy a nation if not brought back to these fundamentals of civilization. Less we forget the whole of man is obeying God.
