FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dec. 8, 2011

RALEIGH – Robert R. Mauldin has received the Lewis R. Holding Philanthropic Leadership Award for 2011, according to James W. Narron, chairman of the board of directors of the North Carolina Community Foundation (NCCF).

Mauldin was honored at the NCCF’s board meeting last week in Raleigh for his instrumental leadership on the statewide board and as the founding president of the Futrell-Mauldin Community Foundation for Greater Rocky Mount, which was officially chartered in 2004 as the Rocky Mount Area Community Foundation, an affiliate of NCCF. The name change occurred in 2010, when Mauldin stepped down as president of the advisory board of the Rocky Mount affiliate after13 years of service. (Samuel W. Johnson now heads up the advisory board.)

Carmen Holding Ames presented the award to Mauldin at the board meeting. The award was established to honor her late father, Lewis R. Holding, who founded the NCCF in 1988. The leadership award is presented by the NCCF board to an affiliate president or board member who has demonstrated exceptional leadership resulting in outstanding growth for an affiliate.

The Rocky Mount affiliate was launched from a fund created in 1997 by Centura Bank to honor Mauldin and Richard Futrell Jr., both retired chairmen of Centura. Since its inception, the Futrell-Mauldin Community Foundation has awarded nearly $550,000 to the Rocky Mount area. “NashCounty certainly benefited from Mr. Mauldin’s leadership on the Rocky Mount board, and the entire State of North Carolina is better off from his visionary contributions to the North Carolina Community Foundation,” said Jennifer Tolle Whiteside, NCCF CEO and president.
