DUGOUT WRAP-UP

After many weeks of rain, rescheduled games and cancellations we have finally had a chance to play some ball!

The Varsity and Sophomore Teams have longed for a season of consistency. They have worked hard to overcome the schedule changes and rain in the 2013 season.

Looking ahead

May 13th - Varsity @ Kankakee

Sophomores vs. Kankakee

May 14th – Varsity vs. Benet

May 15th– Sophomores vs. Coal City

The new batting cage was put up and completed this past month.

The wind screen has been put up along with dugouts painted and accomplishments posted. Thanks to all those that helped in this process.

"Softball Girl "

She puts on a helmet, picks up a bat
and walks to the plate, "Gotta hit, and that's that!"
The crowd starts to cheer, the games on the line
Last inning, two outs, and the score's 9 to 9.
Dad yells "Go get it!" and Mom's clenching her hands,
Coach says "Hit the ball" but alone there she stands.

Heroes are made on seconds such as this,
But she's just a little girl, what if she should miss?
Years after the game's ended and she's little no more,
Will she remember this day, the outcome, the score?
One day she'll have forgotten if she was out, hit or run,
She will only look back on all her friends and the fun.
So cheer this girl on, alone with her fate,
Help her remember with fondness this olstand at the plate.

Spend your time wisely and help in her quest,
to be a hitter with confidence, always her best.
And when the game's over, this girl can stand tall,
For you've helped her prepare to give it her all!

Both MHS Varsity and sophomore teams did a wonderful job raising money for St. Jude’s Hospital. T-shirts were sold and donations were made to the cause.

Note from the coach’s corner

A left-handed slapper hits the ball down the 1st base line that is spinning on the line.

The ball then spins slightly off the line into foul territory, but because it is close to the line, may spin back onto the line in fair territory.

However, before that happens, the slapper, who is now running to 1st base in foul territory, hits the ball with a foot.

ANSWER: FOUL BALL

A foul ball is a batted ball that:

(C) While over foul territory, touches the person, attached or detached equipment or clothing of a player or an umpire, or any object foreign to the natural ground.

Don't try to assume what might happen. This call should be based on what actually happens. As soon as the slapper touches the ball in foul territory, it's a foul ball

Regina Cahue, a 2010 graduate, has just joined the softball team at Joliet Junior College. Good luck to her for the upcoming season!
