Due Wd. 9/21– This paper will be graded (~ 2-hour assignment)

If you need help, go to the math science center. You will be reviewing topics from your prior algebra class – there is no new material here. If it’s new to you, it means that you are in the wrong class.

In order to complete the assignment you need to read the book or the power point presentation for each of the sections 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 – the power points presentations are in my website HANDOUTS link

Math 165 – Guided Activity for section 3.1Name ______

Section 3.1 – Linear Functions

1)Write the equation of the line

2)Is the average rate of change of a linear function constant or variable?

3)What is another name for the ARC of a linear function? Write the symbolic representation shown in the power point.

4)Read the two examples shown on the power point (or in the book): one is about “population” and the other about “maximum number of heart beats”. Which of them is a linear function? How do you recognize if a table displays a linear pattern?

5)If you are given a linear function, how do you recognize if the function is increasing, decreasing or constant? Discuss the three cases.

6)Read the example about “straight line depreciation” given in the power point or book. Then, solve the problem given on the next page.

7)#46, page 139 , section 3.1 – SHOW ALL WORK.

Math 165 – Guided Activity for section 3.3Name ______

Read the book or the power point presentations for this section.

Section 3.3 – Quadratic Functions

1)Write the general form of a quadratic function.

  1. What is the domain?
  1. What is the name of the graph?
  1. If the quadratic coefficient is positive, then ______
  1. If the quadratic coefficient is negative, then ______

2)How do you find the x-coordinate of the vertex?

3)How do you find the y-coordinate of the vertex?

4)Given that the coordinates of the vertex are V(h, k) write the vertex form of a quadratic function.

5)Discuss the possibilities of the range of a quadratic function. Show graphs.

6)To find the x-intercepts of a quadratic function we use the formula: ______

7)What are the possibilities of the number of x-intercepts of a quadratic function? Show graphs. What will be the discriminant for each case?

Section 3.2 – Finding Linear Models for Linearly Related Data

Read the book or the power point presentations for this section.

Reviewing the linear regression process learned in your algebra class – the steps are outlined below

Do problem 20, page 146, which is shown on the next page.

The steps to get the linear regression line are outlined below

Here are the steps for Linear Regression – There is also a video in my website that shows you how to do this. GET HELP if needed

Finding an Equation for Linearly Related Data

To Edit a List

Press STAT

Select 1:Edit by pressing ENTER

Arrow up to “sit” on the name of the list, press CLEAR, ENTER to clear the List

Enter (x) into List 1 by pressing ENTER after each number

Enter (y) into List 2 by pressing ENTER after each number

2nd QUIT to exit the editor and get to the “home screen”

Construct a Scatter plot

Press 2nd STAT PLOT and press ENTER (this selects Plot 1)

Press ENTER to turn the plot on

Arrow to the first graph icon and press ENTER (this selects a scatter plot)

Arrow down, select L1 for Xlist, and press ENTER - (L1 is the 2ndfunction of the key for number 1)

Arrow down, select L2 for Ylist, and press ENTER - (L2 is the 2nd function of the key for number 2)

Press ZOOM 9 (this opens window to see scatter plot)

Press TRACE and arrow right/left (this shows the ordered pairs; check for data-entry error)

Find the Regression Equation

To calculate the regression equation, in the Home Screen, and to paste it into Y1:

Follow the steps outlined below; in the older calculators the command will look like: LinReg(ax+b) L1,L2,Y1

HERE are the steps

Press STAT, arrow to CALC, and select 4:LinReg(ax+b)

Select L1, L2,

To get Y1 press VARS, select Y-VARS, select Function, and then Y1

Press ENTER

To Graph the line along with the scatter graph

Press ZOOM 9:Zoom Stat

To find the predicted values of y

2nd TRACE (CALC)

Select 1:value

Type the given x value and ENTER
