Core I Assessment - AGES

You will write a research paper addressing an action/power/decision of one of the three branches of government - Legislative, Executive or Judicial. Your choice of topic but no duplicates allowed.

DUE DATE Wednesday, Nov 30. No Late work will be accepted.

Your research will be guided by using the appropriate notes organizer available in OneNote.

Your research paper should:

  • Be a minimum of 2 pages in length, double-spaced, 11 pt. font
  • Your paper must address all questions provided in the graphic organizer.
  • You must have a formal Works Cited page with a minimum of 5 resources. (Use Noodle Tools)
  • Ensure your sources are sound and accurate. Use library databases, provided websites, and other sites that are pre-approved by the teacher.
  • You must include a minimum of 5 in-text citations throughout your paper. (See Noodle Tools)

The timeline of due dates is as follows:

  • Friday, November 18- Final topic approved during the first day of assignment. No duplications so have a few choices ready.
  • Tuesday, November 22 - Graphic organizer must be completed at the end of class period. (half day)
  • Tuesday, November 29- Rough DraftDue at end of class period.
  • Wednesday, November 30 - Final Draft due at end of class. Printed, stapled with name on it.

Graphic Organizers for each branch are provided in your notebooks.

ASSIGNMENT: Choose one branch and one topic from that branch.

  1. Legislative:
  • Act or Legislation by Congress
  • What is it?
  • Who proposed it?
  • What is the intent of the law? Background to support its need? Impact of the law?
  • How does it relation to the enumerated powers of Congress? Connect its legality to constitution.
  • Research information regarding the need for the law and provide at least one interest group or organization that supports the law and one that may oppose the law and explain their reasoning.

OR

  1. Executive:
  • Act of Executive Power
  • Executive Order
  • Pardon
  • War Power
  • What is it?
  • Why was it used?
  • Provide background information to demonstrate the need for the action of power
  • What was the outcome? What it successful? What it progressive? Hurtful?
  • Research the support and opposition of one interest group or organization and explain their reasoning,
  • Connect the use of power back to the Constitution

OR

  1. Judicial:
  • Supreme Court Ruling of a Landmark Case
  • What is the case?
  • What is the issue argued in the case?
  • What is the ruling? Unanimous? Dissent? Impact? Outcomes?
  • Provide background of the case
  • Isolated or widespread concern?
  • Parties in the case- who is involved in the case? Both sides.
  • Any precedent cases that may be used when ruling on this case
  • Connect the ruling to the process of jurisdiction, judicial review and other powers within the Constitution.
  • Research the support and opposition of one interest group or organization and explain their reasoning.
