DUBLIN: GLOBAL DINNER DATES

Over the last few years, Dublin has established itself on the global map as a veritable cultural hotspot. Of course,it’s always been home to amazing musicians and poets; from James Joyce to U2, our unique cultural heritage attractsvisitors from all over the world, eager to experience what our vibrant city has to offer. Another factor that’s made Dublin a more attractive destination over the last few years is the fact that it’s become a base for massive international companies like Google and Facebook. This has contributed further to the influx of diverse nationalities, who continue to arrive for both work and play! For foodies, this is extra exciting. All around the city, a host of tasty ethnic restaurants have sprung up, offering delicious cuisines from lands both near and far. Here, we look at five multi-cultural holidays coming up on the 2014 calendar and let you know where in Dublin to celebrate, and of course – find some of the best grub!

Chinese New Year

January 31

Ushering in the Year of the Horse, Chinese New Year 2014 takes place on January 31. Always a vibrant and colourful celebration, the event aims to invite good fortune and luck into the year ahead. In Dublin, the seventh annual Dublin Chinese New Year Festival take place in the city centre from January 7 – February 18, celebrating Chinese culture, music and dance. When you’ve worked up an appetite there, we suggest you head towards foodies’ paradise; Capel Street - where you’ll find Hilan; delicious eatery serving up authentic Chinese food that won’t break the bank. Or why not wander across to Parnell Street, home to Sichuan House (which also does karaoke… win-win!) For something a little fancier, hop on a Luas to Rathmines and sample what Zen – a beautiful Sichuan restaurant in a unique old church setting - has to offer. Happy New Year!

Carnival

February 28 – March 4

There are few festivals as vibrant and exciting as Brazil’s Carnival! Taking placein Rio de Janeiro at the end of February for a whopping five days, this annual eventsees costumed revellers take to the streets for colourful samba parades, parties and music performances. And thanks to a huge Brazilian population currently calling Dublin home, this year’s event will no doubt be celebrated in style here too! Judging by last year’s event (check out the video below!), D2 on Harcourt Street will be the place to be. Each year, the venue hosts ‘Brazil Day Dublin’, a fantastic party featuring live music, DJs, and of course – samba dancing!

For an authentic taste of Rio in Dublin, be sure to check out the very comfy and casual Boteco on Upper Ormond Quay, or, if you’re feeling more decadent, Sabor off Camden Street – decorated in the lush Baroque style of the country’s Minas Gerais state. optional!

Africa Day

May 25

One of the highlights of the Dublin summer calendar has to be Africa Day; a colourful celebration of this amazing continent’s music, dance, food and culture! Though details of this year’s event on May 25 have yet to be confirmed, you can rest assured you’re in for a day of fun! Those of you seeking African cuisine in Dublin are spoilt for choice. We recommend Nigerian restaurant Decency on Mountjoy Street, Moroccan spots Dada (South William Street) El Bahia (Clarendon Street), Mauritius eatery Coin de Mire on Parnell Street, name but a few!

Diwali

October 23– 27

Diwali is five-day Hindu ‘festival of lights’ that takes place every autumn, coinciding with the year’s darkest new moon. A symbolic celebration of light over darkness, Hindus prepare for Diwali by decorating their homes, donning their finest clothes and jewellery, and sitting down together for a delicious meal. Those of you in Dublin can take part in the festivities this year at ‘Dublin Diwali’; where you’ll find street markets, Indian food and fun entertainment for all the family. Fear not though, if you’re looking to party a little longer, rest assured this fun event will run into the wee hours! For an authentic taste of Diwali in the city, be sure to book a table at Nepalese eatery Monty’s of Kathamndu on Eustace Street, Indian restaurant Madina on Mary Street Swai, a delicious Malaysian spot on North Wall Quay.

Hanukkah: December 16 - 24

Jewish holiday Hanukkah is an eight-day ‘festival of lights’ or ‘feast of dedication’, kicking off on the 25th day of Hebrew month Kislev. This year, it coincides beautifully with Irish Christmas celebrations, running from December 16 – 24, with one light of the distinctive menorah candelabrum lit each night of the celebration. In Dublin, the Jewish community has traditionally congregated around Portobello, and here you’ll find the Jewish Museum (Walworth Road), well as the renowned– and very delicious - Bretzel Bakery on Lennox Street, way back in 1870. Visiting Jews concerned about the availability of kosher food in Dublin should head to Kosher Ireland in Rathgar; a company who’ll deliver ready-made meals - prepared under the supervision of the Kashrut Committee of Ireland - straight to your accommodation. What’s more, if you fancy heading to the nearby Grand Canal, or perhaps to leafy Bushy Park for a picnic, Kosher Ireland will provide delicious packed lunches!
