II. INTERVIEW

All candidates will undergo an interview. The interview will seek to determine your attitudes, beliefs, and opinions toward leadership and goal achievement. There are no “correct” answers per se, we only ask you answer honestly. Attempts to produce an answer that you think we’re looking for will come across as insincere. All interviews will take place during your band class in December.

III. EXPERIENCE

Using the reverse of this sheet, list general experience in leadership or other extra-curricular activities that you think will help support your bid for an officer position. Students chosen for leadership will be expected to be at all band functions unless otherwise indicated by the Director. Commitment to the marching band as a leader is paramount and the participation in other events, clubs and activities must be carefully considered if you are to become part of the band leadership team. Therefore, you may not be able to do every single club you wish to participate in if they times and commitments overlap with the marching band schedule. Once you commit to something, you must follow through to completion. ALL CANDIDATES MUST STILL MEET THE REQUIRMENTS SET FORTH BY THE BAND DIRECTOR FOR QUALIFYING TO BE A CANDIDATE.

IV. ESSAY

Submission of an essay on the following topic is required: “How can I make the HCHS Band better?” The essay should be genuine, succinct in thought and word, and clearly articulated and organized. There is no requirement regarding length; length will be determined simply by the candidate’s depth of thought concerning the subject. Of course, grammar, spelling, and general appearance of the essay all enhance the essay’s credibility. You are advised to pay attention to those details as much as possible.

V. AUDITION (DRUM MAJOR CANDIDATES ONLY)

There will be a Drum Major Clinic on December 8. The audition will be on December 13. Mr. Tolbert and possibly one or two other outside, qualified person will comprise the audition panel. Exactly what is covered and expected of drum major candidates during the clinic is:

1)  The Leadership Essay

2)  Preparation of a marching band arrangement given to you.

3)  Calling marching commands to band members.

4)  Calling commands

5)  Conducting the Star Spangled Banner.

VII. DRUM MAJOR SUMMER CAMP (DRUM MAJOR CANDIDATES ONLY)

Should you be selected as drum major, you will be required to attend a drum major summer camp. Many of these are available throughout June and July. Mr. Tolbert will recommend which ones are preferable. The HCHS Band will cover the cost.
