Medication Security and Storage Policy __ 402

It is ServiceNet policy to store medications under proper conditions of sanitation, temperature, light, moisture, ventilation, segregation, and security. Specific medication security and storage procedures are summarized as follows:

·  Staff will store medications for all non-self-medicating individuals in locked containers or areas, in which nothing else except medication is stored.

·  Staff will store medications that require refrigeration in a locked container within a refrigerator.

·  Staff will ensure that medications for all self-medicating people are inaccessible to all other individuals. Such medications may be stored in a locked container or area in which nothing else except medication is stored.

·  Staff will store all narcotics, tranquilizers, and barbiturates in locked containers, regardless of whether or not the individual is self-medicating.

·  Staff will store all controlled substances in double-locked containers or areas, including refrigerator storage.

·  Staff will store medications or ointments used externally separately from medications taken internally.

·  Each residential program shall keep on site one (1) set of keys for access to the medication storage system.

·  One duplicate set of keys shall be in possession of the Program Director for emergency use only as permitted by MAP policy.

·  Keys shall be replaced in the designated locked area after shift completion.

·  Keys are to be kept “on person” during shift, or kept in a locked key box in Medication Administration area. If staff assigned to administer medications must leave the residence, the key shall be placed in its locked designated area.

·  Medication keys lost or misplaced must be reported immediately to the Program Director.

·  Each program will utilize a bound medication count book for recording Schedule II-V medication administration and change of shift “count” of the same.

·  Certified residential staff may access medication storage containers to:

1) Dispense medications at ordered times,

2) Check amounts of medication for reordering purposes,

3) Dispense medication ordered PRN for specific individual conditions per individual request and/or per condition,

4) Add medication deliveries from pharmacy to storage,
