Lesson 1 Getting a permit and license

Objectives: Students will be able to

• explain how to obtain a permit or special learner’s permit and the differences between

them, and the advantages of the special learner’s permit

• describe the licensing procedure

• identify advantages to be gained from Driver Education

• describe 3 ways to control emotions that could affect driving

• describe what to do if a person with road rage is encountered.

Methods

• Distribute driver manuals and textbooks. Explain the information presented in

Chapter 1 and 2 of the manuals.

• Highlight the information presented in Chapter 1 of the text: the values of taking a

DE course, the Smith System of Space Cushion driving, and the SIPDE system.

• Review questions on page 21 of text.

• Read pages 23-25 in textbook about emotions and have students list examples of

emotions that can affect driving.

• View Ford Motor Company Film #1 “It’s a Matter of Attitude” and discuss.

Lesson 3 Getting to Know Your Car

Objectives: Students will

• List the devices to control a car and explain what each does

• Name four safety features in a car

• Name typical instrument panel warning lights and describe what they mean.

• Discuss components of the comfort system, visibility system, protective system,

information system, and communication systems.

• Identify differences among various cars.

Lesson 4 Basic Car Maintenance

Objectives

• Students will be able to list the fluid levels on a typical car

• Students will be able to name basic maintenance checks including coolant level, oil

level, and tire pressure, that can be performed by any motorist.

components of various systems on a car, pages 300-316.

• describe ways to execute 2 and 3 point turns and identify hazards with each

• describe the technique necessary to drive in reverse

Lesson 9 Making turns, Intersections, and Right of Way

Objectives

• Students will be able to describe how to safely implement right of way rules at a 2

way stop, 4 way stop, red light, and when making a left turn.

• Students will be able to diagram proper left and right turns from and onto one way

and two way streets.

Methods

• Read pages 84-86 in text.

• Present examples on the blackboard.

• Highlight sections of the state manual from pages 38-41and 43-45

• Group project: Intersections worksheet, which requires repeated diagramming of

intended paths.

examples.

• Discussion about hydroplaning and page 60 in state manual.

• Invoice vs MSRP

• Available incentives and rebates

• Crash test results

Method

• Distribute my handout called “Driver Education: Buying a Car”

• Describe how to use the sites on that handout by demonstrating on the Gateway

Destination Computer from the Media Center.

Lesson 15 Using Technology: The AL Manual on CD-ROM.

Objectives

Students will be able to name a CD-rom that is available for purchase to continue DE

studies, and will be able to navigate it in class for the written and driving segments.

Methods

Using Gateway Destination Computer #1 from the media center, demonstrate the use of

the Sierra Driver Education program by putting on the AL Driver manual. Give a

demonstration of answering the 6 written questions in a topic area (chapter) and then

demonstrate the driving segment that goes along with that lesson. Using the steering

wheel that came with the program I donated, allow individuals to try.

Evaluation:

Observe volunteer students in action on the program.

Lesson 16, 17, 18 Alcohol and other Drugs

Objectives: Students will be able to

• Answer all questions about this topic as presented in the state driver manual involving

BAL, increased risk, confidence vs performance, and other important issues within

this topic.

• Describe the effects of alcohol on driving ability

• Name the laws and penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol

• Describe other kinds of drugs that affect driving ability

Methods

• Review and discuss pages 64-86 in the state manual, which are about ways to lose

your driving privilege, with alcohol as the main topic in these pages. Ten percent of

the final test for a driver license consists of information about alcohol.

• Role playing

• Use of Fatal Vision Goggles

• Lecture – underlining segments in the driver manual

• Read Chapter 3 in textbook.

Lesson 19 Emergency Situations

Objectives: Students will be able to describe what to do in the event of brake failure,

engine stalling, blowout flat tire, car fires, jump starting a car, procedures involved in the

event of an accident.

Method:

Read pages 94-100 in state manual and 254-272 in textbook

Cooperative learning: Jigsaw. Each group will be assigned an emergency and will teach

the lesson to the other groups.

Lesson 20 Registering, Insuring, and Inspecting your Vehicle; Costs of

Ownership

Objectives: Students will

• List factors to consider that may determine priorities in buying a car, i.e. safety

ratings, functionality, reliability, handling issues, etc.

• List costs of ownership including depreciation, insurance, and maintenance

• Describe the types of auto insurance including liability, collision, and comprehensive,

and roadside assistance.
