Collection Assessment
Submitted by Carley knight
october 2009
Introduction
Based on guidelines provided by the WLN Collection Assessment Services, which provide a framework within which to evaluate a library's current holdings and the level of activity at which the collection is being developed, the Drama and Performing Arts collection is rated an overall 3aP (Intermediate study level and instructional support level, in the primary language). The 3a level indicates that there are “resources adequate for imparting and maintaining knowledge about the primary topics of a subject area”, and that the collection provides adequate support for the undergraduate student along with sufficient material to aid the “lifelong learner.” Please refer to the Drama and Performing Arts conspectus sheets and checklist analysis for a more detailed examination of the Library's holdings.
Holdings

Supplemental support
Holdings providing supplemental support to the Drama and Performing Arts Collection are: General Works, Education, History, Communications, Languages and Related Literatures, Western-European Literatures, English Literature, American Literature, Classics, and Music.A majority of supplemental titles for Drama can be found throughout the P range on the 7th floor.
Summary
Strengths:
The total holdings, conspectus evaluations, and checklist comparisons indicate that the Drama and Performing Arts Collection is more than adequateto support the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Fine Arts curriculum. The strongest areas of the collection are in Motion Pictures (PN 1993-1999) with 2,226 titles, and Dramatic Representation and the Theater (PN 2000-3307)with 2,521 titles, which includes the subgroup Special Regions or Countries with 1,459 titles. There are also significant collections of over 50 titles each in the following areas:the Performing Arts and Show Business with 63 titles, Technique of Dramatic Composition with 58 titles, History of Drama with 94 titles, Art of Acting with 138 titles and Amateur Theater with 55. Notable smaller collections are: Modern Drama with 27 titles and College and School Theatricals with 20 titles. The most notable strength of this assessment is the amazing growth of the collection from 7,452 titles in 2004 to 14,606 titles in 2009.
Weaknesses:
The conspectus sheets indicate that the collection could be stronger in The Art of Acting (PN2061-2071), as well as Drama by period which includes Ancient, Medieval, Renaissance, and Modern (PN 2131-2193).
Recommendations:
- The Performing Arts and Drama Librarian should continue to collect at the same level, but with attention to the above mentioned areas.
- Titles which focus on acting techniques and setting and stage should be collected more heavily as well as less enthusiastic purchasing of film and motion picture titles of which there is no major to support.
- Internet sites should continue to be evaluated and added to the Library’s catalog. Library personnel should take every opportunity to publicize and promote the databases and resources to instructors and students.
