The Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House [DTES NH] is seeking a full time

Program Lead: Community Drop-in and Right to Food Initiativeswho will oversee the DTES Right to Food Network, born of our Food Philosophy, food related partnerships, oversee the Building Welcoming and Inclusive Neighbourhoods (BWIN) Program, and provide leadership to the Community Drop-In Program.

About the DTES Right to Food Network

The working goal of the DTES Right to Food Network is to ensure that all DTES residents have demonstrated food sovereignty regardless of age, ancestry or income within a local DTES food economy. Its objectives are to increase DTES residents’ awareness of their legal, moral and political Right to Food by drawing upon local, national and international examples of comparable movements and to strengthen DTES residents’ economic capacity by supporting the call for a living wage/adequate housing while investigating potential Community Economic Development initiatives which can contribute to an affordable, accessible, sustainable and culturally appropriate DTES Food Economy.

Roles and Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Liaising with other Vancouver Food Security Networks.
  • Lead as directed by the ED all aspects of the Building Welcoming and Inclusive Neighbourhoods (BWIN) Program.
  • Employ existing local gap analysis/reports and review international case studies of models for Food Justice and Community Economic Development using Right to Food principles.
  • Oversee existing DTES Neighbourhood House Right to Food nutritional outreach programming [e.g. Mobile Smoothie Project, Banana Beat] and other creative initiatives.
  • Develop and utilize effective evaluation tools for CDI and RTF programs as directed and reflect DTES residents’ priorities and feedback in programming.
  • Provide support to the community members who are leading the creation and distribution of the Right to Food Zine.
  • Represent the DTES NH upon request.
  • Ensure the opening of the DTES NH Community Drop-in on scheduled days of operation with Volunteer support for Programming start and wrap-up.
  • Liaise with the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre’s Chinese seniors coordinator in regards to the Chinese Elder’s Community Kitchen Program
  • Facilitating screenings of pre-selected movies related to a variety of NH themes [Building Welcoming and Inclusive Neighbourhoods, Right to Food, Environmental Justice etc].
  • Setting up & coordinatingthe use of programming space by sister organizations and community partners as directed by the ED.
  • Coordinate the Community Conversations Program (community meetings)
  • Ensuring the regular updating ofCDI and RTF Programming signage
  • Supporting NH Programming staff and guests such as Workshop Facilitators/Resource people
  • Recruiting and overseeing program Volunteers for CDI and RTF programs
  • Co-facilitating monthly Volunteer Meetings with NH Programming staff
  • Ensure the maintenance of a daily Log of programs, staff attendance, community participation and meals served.
  • Attending staff meetings as directed
  • Completing Incident Reports as required
  • Working effectively, respectfully and collaboratively within the culture of a staff team
  • Adhering to the DTES NH Code of Conduct policy
  • Maintaining an orderly, organized Programming space
  • Lead the DTES NH organizational food raising efforts in accordance with our food philosophy and guidelines

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years experience working in a similar inner city non profit environment or relevant comparable experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of international Right to Food/Food Security movement.
  • WCB First Aid Level 1
  • Food Safe Level 1 and 2
  • Driver’s License an asset
