Swim Lessons:

Just Keep Swimming

By: Becca Haegele

Learning to swim is very important for all children in order to stay safe during water activities like swimming at a pool, going to the beach, or riding in a boat.

Many children take swim lessons at a local YMCA. Some pools at the YMCA are outside while and keep people cool in the summer. Other pools are indoors and kept warm all winter long!

The water in the pool is for swimming and not good to drink. The water has chlorine in it to keep it clean.

Norman will begin attending swim class at the YMCA pool. Each class will be 30 minutes long. That’s the length of one episode of Spongebob!

There will be three other children in Norman’s class taking swim lessons too.

Norman will arrive at the pool with mom and put on his bathing suit in the bathroom.

The area around the pool is called a deck. On the deck there will be many other children and it may get noisy. The children wait for their names to be called to start the lesson.

Miss Melissa is the name of Norman’s swim teacher. She is very nice and likes to play many fun games.

She is trained to keep children safe in the water and help them learn to swim. Miss Melissa greets her students with a big smile. She likes to bring her friend Nemo with her during swim lessons.

When their names are called, the children leave their parents to swim with Miss Melissa.

Some children feel afraid when they have to leave their parents. It can help to remember that Miss Melissa is there to keep the children safe in the pool. The pool is a safe place.

Miss Melissa and her friend Nemo will teach the children many different ways to swim. She likes to teach back floats, kicking, reaching and pulling, and jumping off the wall.

Miss Melissa will play games and sing songs with the children too. Swim lessons are FUN!

Some children may get scared during the swim lesson and that’s okay.

They can tell Miss Melissa that they are feeling afraid. She will go slow and help them feel better.

After 30 minutes the swim lesson is over.

Miss Melissa will lead the class to meet their parents. Miss Melissa and Nemo will wave goodbye.

Swim lessons are a lot of fun and safe with Miss Melissa and Nemo.

Learning to swim is important to stay happy and safe in the water for summer fun!
