DOVE Center flying high on IRONMAN donation
Origin: St. George, UT – April 29, 2015
St. George’s own DOVE Center received a $10,000 grant from the IRONMAN Foundation® Community Fund for community awareness and prevention education activities concerning domestic violence and sexual assault. In preparation for the local 70.3 triathlon on May 2, 2015, the IRONMAN Foundation works to give back to its host community of St. George. The Foundation has donated nearly $275,000 to the St. George area since the first local race in 2010.
The DOVE Center will direct a portion of the funds toward its upcoming Personal Safety class, a holistic prevention course focused on empowerment, social awareness, and restoration. The class is a collaborative effort of the DOVE Center and Tim’s group nameand is aimed at anyone who has experienced any type of violence or assault, about to start college or a foreign experience, or returning to the dating scene. The funds will help cover costs fortextbooks, protective gear, and associated materials.
IRONMAN funds will also be used for ongoing outreach activities and prevention lectures, which the DOVE has been working to expand in 2015. “We often get invited to speak at classes or to girls’ groups,” says Annie Fuller, Outreach Coordinator. “But we’d love to increase our volunteer lecture series to include groups of teenage boys, parents, and even senior citizens.” The DOVE Center presented 48 community lectures in 2014, but its staff and volunteers want to do more. “This is something that impacts everyone,” says Fuller.
The IRONMAN grant and the DOVE Center’s April fundraising gala have both been a further boost to community-outrea. “Most of our state and federal grant funding is restricted to direct-client services, but we want to reach out to the St. George and surrounding communities,” says Adele Pincock, Development Coordinator. “This IRONMAN grant and private donations allow us to reach a broader audience and increase awareness.”
