Bachelor of Arts (Hons) English Education
(i)Programme Aims
The aims of the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) English Educaction programme are as follows:
- Expose students to general principles of teaching and learning of English in an English as a Second Language environment
- Introduce students to the workings of the English language
- Improve their language proficiency and competency so as to be able to teach effectively
- Equip students with the necessary skills so that they become effective, trained and competent language educators
- Expose students to the use of current technology, approaches and techniques inEnglisheducation
(ii)Objectives of Course of Study
- Apply the principles of teaching and learning to language teaching situations so as to conduct a language lesson effectively to learners of English as a second language
- Design suitable curricula and syllabi, prepare teaching plans appropriate for the teaching and learning of English as a second language
- Analyse and use English Language structures in various discourses in a variety of contexts for the purpose of teaching and learning language situations
- Evaluate and assess the language proficiency of the language learners
- Evaluate and assess teaching materials and resources used in language teaching and learning
(iii)Programme Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the programme, students will be able to:
- Prepare and use effectively, teaching-learning materials for language learners from various language abilities and cultural backgrounds
- Write curricula, syllabi and lesson plans for different language skills
- Evaluate, select and write suitable materials for the teaching and learning of English
- Construct table of specifications and test items for language tests and examinations
- Conduct self-evaluation of teaching skills so as to develop professionally and academically
- Incorporate educational technology in the language teaching and learning process
- Write research papers related to language teaching and learning for conference presentation, publications and/or academic development.
