November 2017 Newsletter- Revised on 11/9/17
Principal’s Message
Hello Dogwood Family,
I hope everyone is having an enjoyable start to the fall season! The fall season also ushers in the end of the first quarter. There have been a few changes made to the BCPS report card format. For example, any student reading below grade level will have their instructional reading level (in accordance to the Fountas and Pinnell Assessment) indicated on the report card along with explanation, and special areas (physical education, music, art, library media, etc.) will only be graded during the second and fourth quarter. In addition, teachers will only be able to write comments during the second and third quarter. Please make sure you sign up for a conference with your child’s homeroom teacher. Elementary conference day is Friday, November 17, 2017.
In response to parent input during the 2016-2017 school year students will now receive quarterly rewards for making honor roll and receiving high marks on the skills and conduct section of the report card. Please attend the 1st Quarter Parent Voice session on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 to receive additional details about the changes to the report card, honor roll criteria, 2017-2018 School Progress Plan, etc. Remember, these meeting are offered at flexible times in order to accommodate your very busy work schedules.
As always, thank you for your unwavering support!
Respectfully Submitted,
Ms. Johari Toe

ü  Dogwood Elementary is a food-free birthday party school. We celebrate and recognize the children on their special day over the announcements and in the classroom. If you would like to send in goody bags be creative with non-food items such as pencils, stickers, erasers, or small notepads. Children just enjoy a surprise.

Math Overview and Helpful Tips for Math Unit 6: How Many Do You Have?
·  K.CC.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens
·  K.CC.A.02- Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence (instead of having to begin at 1).
·  K.CC.A.03- Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects).
·  K.CC.B.04- Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
·  K.CC.B.04.a- When counting objects, say the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object
·  K.CC.B.04.b- Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
·  K.CC.B.04.c- Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
·  K.CC.B.05- Count to answer "how many?" questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configuration; given a number from 1-20, count out that many objects.
·  K.CC.C.06- Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.
·  K.CC.C.07- Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 presented as written numerals.
·  K.MD.A.01- Describe measurable attributes of objects, such as length or weight. Describe several measurable attributes of a single object.
·  K.MD.B.03- Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.3
·  K.NBT.A.01- Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each composition or decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 18 = 10 + 8); understand that these numbers are composed of ten ones and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
·  K.OA.A.01- Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), and acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.
·  K.OA.A.02- Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10, e.g., by using objects or drawings to represent the problem.
·  K.OA.A.03- Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
·  K.OA.A.04- For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.
·  K.OA.A.05- Fluently add and subtract within 5.

·  Short a as in apple
ELA Overview
Second grade students will be primarily involved with Unit 3 (Unique) throughout November. In this unit, students will read a variety of literary and informational texts which are connectedto the big idea, Unique. Through these texts, students will be introduced to unique cultures, environments, plants, and animals from around the world, and focus on the qualities that make them unique. The essential question, "What does it mean for something, someplace, or someone to be unique?” connects the texts through literary and informational anchor standards. Leveled readers provide additional opportunities for students to read and compare texts on the same topics, all related to unique cultures, environments, plants, and animals.
Standards:
·  RI.2.3Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text.
·  RI.2.9Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.
·  RL.2.1Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
·  RL.2.2Recount stories, including fables and folktales, from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.
·  RL.2.3Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
·  RL.2.7Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
·  RF.2.3Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
·  SL.2.4Tell a story or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking audibly in coherent sentences.

Math Overview - November math Units 2:2-d and 3-D Geometry Overview and Unit 3: Addition, Subtraction, and the Number System 2.
Unit 2 Overview- Students identify two and three-dimensional shapes, focus on the properties of rectangles and rectangular prisms, and identify and create symmetrical designs. The Shapes software is introduced as a tool for extending and deepening this work. This tool is designed for K–2 students to explore how different shapes go together, experiment with different sorts of geometric transformations (rotations, translation, reflection), explore patterning, and investigate symmetry.Students also achieve fluency with the doubles addition combinations.
Standards assessed:
·  02.G.A.01- Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.5 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
·  02.G.A.02- Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total number of them.
Unit 3 Overview -In this second number unit, students solve problems with multiple addends and consider whether order matters in addition. For example, does 7 + 4 + 3 + 6 = 7 +3 + 4 + 6? Students revisit addition and subtraction story problems, investigate even and odd numbers, and begin to make sense of counting by groups and place value (tens and ones). Work on addition combinations continues as students achieve fluency with the Near Doubles.
Standards assessed:
·  02.NBT.A.02- Count within 1000; skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s
·  02.NBT.B.05- Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
·  02.OA.B.02- Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
·  02.OA.C.03- Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members,
