Does God Hate?March 11, 2011

With the recent Supreme Court ruling that it is ok for people to picket military funerals with signs that read things like “GOD HATES FAGS!” (a term I hate to use) I thought that it would be interesting to do a study on Hate in relationship to God.

According to Merriam-Webster, Hate is: intense hostility and aversion usually deriving from fear, anger, or sense of injury. extreme dislike.

  1. Does God hate? If so, what does God hate?
  1. Does God hate Homosexuals? Does God approve of Homosexuality? Can you be a homosexual and go to Heaven?
  1. Do you think that we are more offended by these protestors (that is, IF you are offended) because it is at a military funeral or because of what they are preaching on the signs?
  1. What does it mean or look like to “Speak the truth in Love”? How do we know that the protestors are or are not doing that?
  1. Does God view the sin of homosexuality greater than any other sin?
  1. It seems that Christians are obsessed with the sin of homosexuality. Why do you think that is so?

Proverbs 6:16-19

16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out liesand a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Ephesians 4:15

15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.

1 Peter 3:15

15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

Leviticus 18:22

Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable.

Romans 1:26-27

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

1 Corinthians 6:9

9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
