  1. Report from Office for Academic Affairs
  • The report from the October 16-17, 2006 visit by the Board of University Education included numerous words of praise and observed many strengths at CSP. The following are some of the identified academic programs’ strengths:
  • OHSCO complements the Lutheran identity and promotes the mission of the institution.
  • The Center for Hmong Studies puts CSP on the international map for Hmong scholarship and research.
  • The intentional focus on science and business classes provides a good platform for new programs needed and desired by students.
  • Efforts to assess educational effectiveness in General Education courses are commendable. As departments develop assessment plans for majors and as the eLumen software is more fully utilized, assessment of student learning will become integrated into the campus culture.
  • Patricia Hampl to speak at first Heginbotham Literary Lecture

The Department of English and Modern Languages announces the first “Possibilities” Heginbotham Literary Lecture Series. The lecture is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 15, 2006 in the E. M. Pearson Theatre. The Heginbotham Literary Lectureship is made possible by private donors who have contributed toward the establishment of an endowment to honor Dr. Eleanor Heginbotham and her distinguished record of teaching and scholarship at Concordia University as well as her many contributions to the literary community in the Twin Cities.

The speaker for the inaugural event will be Patricia Hampl. Patricia Hampl is the author of two highly acclaimed memoirs, A Romantic Education and Virgin Time. In her most recent book I Could Tell You Stories: Sojourns in the Land of Memory, Hampl reflects on the landscape bordered by memory and imagination in a series of story-like recollections and essays. All three books were selected as New York Times Notable Books of the Year. Ms. Hampl is Regents’ Professor and also McKnight Distinguished Professor at the University of Minnesota where she teaches in the MFA program of the English Department. She is also on the permanent faculty of The Prague Summer Seminars and resides in St. Paul.

  • Upcoming Exhibition:RACE at the MinnesotaScienceMuseum– go to for more information.

World Premiere on January 10, 2007
We all know that people look different. Ever since our country's beginnings, we have used the idea of race to describe these differences. At times, racial identity has been a source of strength and community. More often, it has been the basis for discrimination and oppression. But what is race, really?

RACE brings together the everyday experience of race, its history as an idea, the role of science in that history, and the findings of contemporary science that are challenging its foundations. This exhibit offers an unprecedented look at race and racism in the United States. And while those differences are socially and culturally real, contemporary scientific understanding of race and human variation is complex and may challenge how we think about it. The American Anthropological Association, in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota is developing an exhibit to look at human variation and the reality—and unreality—of race.

I” [Racism] is not about how you look, it is about how people assign meaning to how you look.” - Robin D.G. Kelley, historian.

RACE is A Project of the American Anthropological Association, funded by the Ford Foundation & National Science Foundation. Local programming provided by St. Paul Travelers Foundation, The St. Paul Foundation, Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Minneapolis Foundation, and the Archie and Bertha Walker Foundation

  • The Sixth Annual Poehler Lecture on Faith and Learning has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. in the BuengerEducationCenter.

The planning committee has selected Dr. Stephen Stohlmann as the Poehler Lecture speaker for 2007. Dr. Stohlmann is Professor of Theology and Biblical Languages at ConcordiaUniversity and a key initiator of this lecture series. Dr. Stohlmann has served Concordia and the larger church in innumerable capacities since coming to Saint Paul in 1976, having previously served in parish ministry in Nebraska.

As in past years, the 2007 Poehler Lecture is supported by a generous gift from Robert and Elizabeth Trembath, daughter of former CSP President Poehler, after whom the lecture series is named.

The Poehler Lecture is sponsored by all four colleges of Concordia University, and this is reflected in the membership of the planning committee (Arts and Sciences, Kathryn Schenk, the first lecture speaker; Business and Organizational Leadership, Jim Gimbel; Education, Michele Pickel; and Vocation and Ministry, David Lumpp, fifth lecture speaker; at large, Kay Madson, fourth lecture speaker).

We look forward to an engaging presentation. Please encourage everyone to put this date on their calendars and plan to attend. David Lumpp,
