Group: Loyalty
One of the requirements of participating in JLAB is group projects to build teamwork. The Best Practices project asks for the best of each JROTC unit’s most interesting service to their community. Some of our best practices are displayed below:
Oakland High SchoolMurfreesboro, TN
Practice: Education Officer / Oakland High School strives to maintain and improve an efficient counseling system. Squad leaders will counsel their squads, and then the paperwork is forwarded up the cadet chain of command. If approval is given at each stage of the counseling, then the cadet is promoted to the next grade of rank. Cadets must maintain an average of an A, B, or C in each class in order to be promoted. This method allows them to see who is contributing the most to the battalion, and reward them accordingly.
Randleman High School
Randleman, NC
Practice: Adopt-A-School / With the Adopt-A-School program, Randleman High School visits Randleman Middle School to provide assistance to students struggling in their classes. Randleman’s JROTC sends cadets of LET 4 or higher to the school during their block of JROTC. This program provides student tutors and role models, as well as a chance to recruit for the upcoming year for JROTC.
Red Bank High School
Chattanooga, TN
Practice: Blood Drive / Red Bank High School holds a semiannual Blood Drive in our rifle range. Every student 16 and older is eligible to take part. You sign up for a time during the school day and come down and give blood, or plasma. And even if you’re not 16 , you can take part in running the program and helping set up and break down. It brings a lot of kids in our school together, to work as a team and a unit, to help people in need.
Strawberry Crest High School
Dover, FL
Practice: Area Beautification / Strawberry Crest High School’s JROTC program plans and executes area beautification projects in order to boost the attractiveness and cleanliness of the school as well as build upon the strong reputation of our JROTC program. By creating area beautification events, our JROTC program helps recruit new cadets to the program and promote the school itself, making area beautificationa key part that leads to the success of our JROTC program and the school.
Union County High School
Union, SC
Practice: Recruiting / Recruiting is an important key to any JROTC program. Union County High School’s JROTC program uses this to get the word out to the community about JROTC. We recruit new cadets to the program each year by taking the Drill Team to perform for events such as Veteran’s Day and Black History Month observances. Our battalion public affairs officer is a key part of the recruiting effort also. She publishes articles and photos of all of our key events in both local newspapers. The Color Guard performs at dozens of community events each year, including; home football games, Veteran’s Parade, church patriotic performances, and GNCC Racing Events.
Conclusion
The two important aspects that our best practices display are a need for education, and giving back to the community. Events such as the beautification and blood drive help JROTC gain support for everything we do. Despite the variety of programs that each unit offers, we seek to influence change in our surroundings and make an impact.
