Job: Teacher - Crossings Care and Education Service

JOB PURPOSE
To lead the education provision for up to 5 young people within residential care at the Crossings Care and Education Service, which is a Short to Mid Term Assessment Service.The service, particularly the education program will be based on Nurture Group Principles working as a teacher with the Registered Manager, Assistant Manager and to lead Social Educators, to fulfil the education program.
Safeguarding children and vulnerable people is a priority for all employees.
NATURE OF THE POST
The Crossings Care and Education Service has been established as a joint venture between Together Trust’s social care and education services to provide a new assessment service for looked after young people by the Local Authorities aged 11 to 17 on admission.
By creating a nurturing environment in all aspect of a young person’s life, Crossings Care and Education Service will integrate care and education through all staff working to the same principles and applying them consistently. All Social Educators will be working with young people not only in the home but also working with them in school time. The teacher will have a key role in leading the work during the school day, this will require leading the Social Educators to deliver designated parts of the education program. The Teacher Role is part of the management team of the service, and will be expected to promote and develop the education program.
Crossings Care and Education is part of Ashcroft School, where the young people will be registered as pupils. The Headteacher is committed to the Crossings Care and Education Service and will promote and support collaborative working within Ashcroft andCrossings Care and Education Service. The role will be required to meet regular with the Headteacher from Ashcroft or designated person,the Headteacher will offer support and advice and the teacher will be expected to attend training and other activities as directed by the Headteacher in consultation with the registered manager. The Teacher will provide regular information updates, and to meet with the Residential Senior Operation Manager, alongside the Registered Manager to develop the service.
Conduct / Procedures
At all times the post holder is expected to conduct him or herself professionally and adhere to the policies and procedures of Ashcroft School and Together Trust. The area of work is sensitive and the postholder will be expected to have particular regard to the Together Trust’s policy on confidentiality and work within a framework agreed with the Headteacher and Principal Managers.
There is an expectation of successfully completing induction and ongoing training to achieve this aim. The nature of the work of the Together Trust is varied and in many instances unpredictable. All staff will be expected to work in a flexible way and undertake other tasks that have not been covered in the job description.
There is an expectation that the teacher will work flexibly so that they can be present at Crossings Care and Education Service at key times outside their working day/year, and attend necessary meetings and training.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To provide education of pupils that is based on Teachers’ Standards 2012
i. Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge pupils
ii. Promote good progress and outcomes by pupils
iii. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
iv. Plan and teach well structured lessons
v. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all pupils
vi. Make accurate and productive use of assessment
vii. Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
viii. Fulfill wider professional responsibilities
2. To work within the ethos and the procedures and practices of Ashcroft School and Crossings Care and Education Service as set out in the Policies of the Together Trust and the School.
3. To promote and develop understanding with in Crossings Care and Education Service the 6 principles of nurture, working to the Nurture Group Network standards group principles and providing guidance and training for within the CAS. The role will also require developing an understanding of the Children’s Homes Regulations and Ofsted Assessment Framework.
4. a) To oversee and contribute to matching and placing needs of all referrals to the Service, due to the nature of the service this may be at times outside of normal working hours.
b) To be responsible for the education elements of the baseline and ongoing Boxall assessment of young people attending Crossings Care and Education Service Assessment Service contributing to their Care Plan and other statutory requirements, and integrating all the assessment information on a young person to inform school based plans that are consistent with and complement care plans. This will require attendance at meetings such as LAC Reviews, Strategy Meetings, Core Group Meetings, SEN and Education Planning Meetings.
c) prepare and contribute to statutory reviews and be accountable for the students’ educational progress and emotional development
5. To establish with the young people their priorities for learning and improvement, setting targets with them and ensuring they understand their progress path.
6. To be responsible for the effective deployment of social educators during the school hours, this includes; promoting daily routine, reporting concerns to Registered Manager, completing Joint Supervisions with Social Educators and assisting with the Social Educator Appraisal process.
7. To support and work closely with the Registered Manager of Crossings Care and Education Service to ensure the effective operation and development of the service, including contribution to the service Development Plan, attending Management Meetings, and to lead and develop the Social Education role.
8. To work with the registered manager to set up clear behaviour management systems for school and home.
i. set clear targets for improving behaviour using positive strategies
ii. to promote SCIP approaches, and to seek guidance from Ashcroft PROACT SCIPr Instructor.
iii. to work with the social educators to develop their own skills in working with young people with behaviour difficulties in school and the home
iv. Use Nurture and SEAL principles to establish behaviour targets and develop social skills
9. To demonstrate effective continual professional development through self awareness, reflective analysis of practice and incidents and responding positively to ongoing monitoring of his/her teaching and learning
10. To establish effective working relationships with colleagues, and develop effective relationships with all relevant internal and external professionals.

Additional information
The work at the Trust for those working directly with the service userscan be physically demanding on occasion and employees must be able to undertake in full with the requirements of the job and requisite training.
For the safety of staff and the service users training will be provided to assist employees to carry out their role, specifically the Movement & Management of Loads & People, Emergency First Aid and PROACT SCIPr UK training (a technique that provides staff with the skills to carry out the sometimes necessary safe holds in a non threatening way). Employees will be required to fully participate in all training.
