Literature Review and APA Style Writing

· Several authors used in introduction

· Past tense

· IN TEXT CITATIONS

o Author and year citation is include in the sentence - or –

o If author’s name is in the sentence only cite the year

o Last names only (NO FIRST NAMES EVER!!!!)

o Page numbers only on direct quotes

o If same author & same year use lower case a, b, c, . . .

o Multiple authors use & (not the word “and”)

o Semi Colon separates different articles inside the same parentheses

· If 3 or more authors, list all names in the first citation. In subsequent citations list first author and et al

· If the entire paragraph refers to one author, cite only once (at the beginning or end of the paragraph). If in doubt, cite.

· Integration: have more than one source in a paragraph. Two authors made the same conclusions.

· ALL CITATIONS ARE INSIDE THE PERIOD!!!!

· Subheadings are the effective way to organize your paper (Center, No Bold).

· Indent every paragraph and double space everything (except quotes over five lines).

· Headers are in the top right corner, short title and page number (with no p) beginning with the title page as page 1.

· This is scientific writing:

o Third person

o No personal pronouns (NO he, she, we, they, I, me, us)

o No gender identification

o IF YOU FEEL LIKE EXPRESSING YOUR OPINION – DON’T

o Short paragraphs (3-7 sentences)

· Verbs are always past tense

o Reported, concluded, found, argued, measured, revealed, described, proposed, indicated, focused

· There is no: firstly, secondly, thirdly, lastly, etc….

o It is first, second, third, last

· Adverbial introductory phrases (and prepositional phrases) help the reader and always have a comma. E.g. “During the first year of the study, …

· REFERENCE PAGE

o Center the word “References” at the top of the page.

o No first names

o Last name, first initial. (year). Article title, Journal (italics), year/vol page numbers

§ IN ARTICLE TITLES ONLY THE FIRST WORD IN CAPITALIZED, AND WORD FOLLOWING A COLON (do capitalize Proper nouns).

§ Use the & before the last author, not the word “and”

o Alphabetical by Author’s last name.

o All lines are double-spaced.

o Indent as prescribed.
