ROYAL NATIONAL LIFEBOAT INSTITUTION

SEPTEMBER 19TH AND 20TH

Thisyear’s Social Event will be held over two days and one night.

It will be held in Poole and we will be using the RNLI College for most of the Event.

The College is a unique facility, situated in a waterside setting close to the Quay in the centre of town.

As you may know, it is the home of world leading search and rescue training and we will be given a tour of all these facilities.

A summary of our activities and costs per person appear below.

Monday 19th Sept / 1400 / RNLI COLLEGE – Guided Tour / No Cost

See how the RNLI crews and life guards are trained in a behind the scenes tour.

During the 90 minute guided tour, we will be given the chance to explore the RNLI College and its training facilities, including the world-class Sea Survival centre, which hosts the wave tank and Lifeboat simulator.

This is a three course dinner. The price includes port, coffee/tea, petit fours and gratuity

Guest of Honour

I am pleased to say that MICHAEL VLASTO OBE FRIN FNI will be our guest of honour and speaker at Dinner.

Michael left the School of Navigation in 1965 and was one of the first cadets to study for the OND in Nautical Science. He joined P&O and remained with the Company as a deck officer until 1973 when he swallowed the anchor after completing Masters. In 1975 he joined the RNLI as a Lifeboat Inspector.

He was appointed to Chief of Operations (later Operations Director) in 1997 with operational responsibility for the lifeboat and lifeguard services and developing coastal safety services. This involved over 500 full time staff, 5,000 volunteers supporting 236 lifeboat stations, over 200 lifeguard units throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland and the Flood Rescue Teams.

He retired from the RNLI in July 2013 after 38 years of service to maritime Search and Rescueand has received many awards for his activities associated with the saving of life at sea. He is a Younger Brother of Trinity House and a Livery member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners and the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights..

Michael now lives in Cheshire.

The cruise departs from PooleQuay (a walk of about 5-10 minutes from the RNLI) and sails through Europe’s largest natural harbour.

It will take you around the islands and past the beautifulbeaches and bays of Poole harbour. Cruising

close to Brownsea Island and its castle and viewing the famous houses at Sandbanks (tide permitting).

We then leave the harbor and sail along the start of the Jurassic Coast as far as Swanage.

There is the option to get off the boat in Swanage and return on a later boat. Enjoy a meal and shopping in this charming Victorian town.

Cost

The All-weather Lifeboat Centre, based on-site at the RNLI College, has brought production, maintenance and refit of the all-weather lifeboat fleet under one roof for the first time in RNLI history. This secures a supply of all-weather lifeboats for future generations of lifesavers and provides the RNLI greater control of costs and quality, and creates employment, including apprenticeships in marine engineering and boatbuilding.

There is a limit of 12 on this tour. If more than 12 request this tour, Roger Holt will ‘blindly’ select the lucky ones, one month before the event.
