5. TITLE OF THE TOPIC: SUBSTANTIATION OF “RAKTEMLA SHISHIRA PRITI” WITH AMALAKI IN RAKTA KSHAYA

6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK:

6.1 NEED FOR STUDY

Rakta is second among the Saptadhatus; chief function is Jeevana1 and is responsible for nourishing the Dhatus, bringing colour to the skin.2Rakta Kshaya is one of the common scenarios due to various etiological factors. Some features seen in Rakta Kshaya are desire for sour things, cold items etc.3

In Ayurveda, Samanya Visesha Siddhanta is one of the basic principles, where Samanya is a state of similarity which is always responsible for the augmentation of Dravya, Guna and Karma.4 ‘Amla Shishira Priti’ is a Lakshana seen in Raktakshaya5.So Amalaki which is Amla Rasa Pradhana can be considered as a suitable remedy for this. Hence this Siddhanta can be applied in Rakta Kshaya, by administering Amalaki, which is having amla rasa satisfies the Amlapriti in those who are having Rakta Kshaya.

As per our classics, Amalaki is one among the Nityaprayunjita Dravyas.6 It is capable of promoting health, preventing and curing diseases.7,8Amalaki is also well known for its Rasayana property.9 It is having Amla pradhana Pancharasa and Sita Virya.10 Amla Rasa is Raktakrit11 in nature. Raktha Kshaya is characterised by a Tejo Vruddhi12 therefore there will be a desire for the things having opposite Gunas to Teja i.e Sita. Sita Virya is also having jeevana property13 which inturn is the Pradhana Karma of Rakta. Hence Amalaki which is having Amla Rasa and Sita Virya is taken for the study to substantiate the Rakthakshaya Lakshanas.

Review of the phytochemical constituents of Amalaki mentioned by the phytochemists of 20th century, it contains all the necessary materials such as iron, vitamin C, etcwhich are required for the formation of RBC.14 Amalaki is having erythrogenic properties ie, it enhances production of red cells; facilitates the absorption of iron in the body there by increases the Hb level.15

Therefore this study is planned to revalidate the Raktemla Shishira Priti with Amalaki in Rakta Kshaya.

6.2REVIEW OF LITERATURE

All Ayurvedic compendia realize the importance of Rakta Dhatu. Acharya Susrutha proposes Rakta Dhatu is equally important as the Tridoshas.16 Acharya states that all the other Dhatus are dependent on Rakta Dhatu for their nourishment.17The properties of Rakta are Visrata, Dravata, Raga, Spandana and Laghuta.18 Acharya tells about the functions for Rakta as Varnaprasada, Mamsapushti & Jeevana.19 Susrutha also says that Rakta Dhatu is extremely important for the sustenance of life & it is therefore needed to protect this Dhatu by every possible measure.20 Acharya Caraka considered Rakta as one among the Dasapranayatanas.21 Acharya says that the living creatures are endowed with Bala, Varna, Sukha and Ayu due to Sudha Rakta.22 According to Vagbhatacharya Jeevana, Varnaprasadana & Mamsaposhana are the main functions of Raktadhatu.23

According to Vagbhata Rakta Kshaya Lakshanas are Amla Shitabhilasha, Sira Shaithilya and Twak Rukshata.24 Susrutha mentions the Shonita Kshaya Lakshana as Twak Parushata, Amla Shitabhilasha and Sira Shaithilya.25 Caraka also says Twak Parushata, Twak Sphutana and Mlanata as the Lakshanas of Rakta Kshaya.26

Amalaki is having Amlapradhana Pancharasa, Sita Virya, Madhura Vipaka and Tridoshasamaka.27 According to Dhanwantari Nighantu Vayastha, Aamalakam, Vrshyam, Jatiphalarasam, Shivam, Dhatriphalam, Shriphalam and Amritaphalam are the synonyms of the drug.28
