Dear Colleague:
The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP) is pleased to be able to invite you to a special Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) Network Conference August 25–26, 2005. The conference will be hosted at Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin. You are invited to attend both, or one, days. There is no fee for the conference. Qualified IHE conference participants will receive a $50 per day stipend.
Deborah Ball and Hyman Bass, internationally prominent researchers in the area of mathematical knowledge needed for teaching, will actively engage us in critical examination of their NSF-funded work focused on student learning of undergraduate calculus and prospective teacher mathematical development for K-12 education. At the University of Michigan, mathematics educators and mathematicians are working together to improve mathematics learning. According to Bass, the Roger Lyndon Professor of Mathematics, who also holds a joint appointment in the School of Education, UM has “groups of unusual talent, in both mathematics and mathematics education, collaboratively engaged with a fundamental national problem.”
The MMP offers this conference for mathematicians and mathematics educators as a kick-off for a series of conferences and working groups to be supported in the study of and professional growth on the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels. Based on your participation and areas of interest, we will offer continued opportunities for participants and their colleagues to work together at seminars, working sessions, and study groups through the coming year and beyond on issues of student learning and teaching of mathematics.
Sincerely,
Henry Kepner Kevin McLeod
