BASIC MAP RULES

1. Maps must be neatly labeled and colored. (Use one (1) direction for coloring)

2. All letters must be printed in BLACK ink or with a pencil.

3. All labeling should be done in CAPITAL letters, except for cities, rivers, and mountains. EX: UNITED STATES

4. Cities, rivers, and mountains should begin with a capital letter and the rest of the word in lowercase. EX: Rocky Mountains

5. BLUE is only used to color water.

6. Lettering for rivers should follow the curves of the river.

7. All other lettering should be straight across (horizontal) and evenly spaced.

8. Your map must have a compass rose, a legend/key that explains all symbols and colors and a title.

9. Only rivers and mountains can be abbreviated.

River = R. Mountain = Mt. Mountains = Mts.

10. Mountains will be colored BROWN and labeled as

11. All other land features should be colored GREEN.

12. States or countries that are touching need to be colored different colors.

A. Blue - ONLY for water

B. Color in one (1) direction only

C. Color lightly

D. Color Political Map any color except Black, White, or Grey. (Shows boundaries)

E. Color Physical Map (Shows Physical features)

Blue - Water Brown - Mountains

Yellow - Desert Green - Land
