From the President
As we brought to a close our meetings for the summer break, I was reflecting on what a great year the chapter has experienced. We have had strong attendance, wonderful speakers and interesting new topics. We have seen strong growth in membership as each of you have welcomed peers and invited guests who have become members. We have been able to reach out to the nursing school programs and have had students attending many meetings. Our pharma representatives have encouraged practices to send nurses to our local meetings and also provided lots of educational opportunities throughout the year.
The round table meeting in April had over 100 participants with lots of enthusiasm from vendors and guests alike. For the nurses week meeting in May, it was exciting to see so many gifts donated to such worthy hard working individuals. The massage school provided chair massages, which were greatly appreciated by everyone.
I would like to thank each of you for your dedication in attending the meetings. I offer gratitude for the work of the Board of Directors, To Diane McElwain for coordinating the programs and making a tough job look easy and also to Debi Oxenberg for her hard work on the newsletter.
Oncology has faced issues in 2004, which left us wondering how changes in the law would affect our elderly patients and also our jobs. It seemed like it was a moving target politically, but given the uncertainty, we are still here and are continuing to progress in the care for cancer patients. 2004 has brought new therapies, Avastin and Erbitux for colon cancer, Alimpta, Velcade and Aloxi. Everyday is a learning experience as knowledge increases and we have the need to remain on the cutting edge. We are all excited for new tools to use in the care of our patients. I feel most of us chose oncology nursing because of the hope we can offer to patients and the healing that a kind touch, attached to an experienced oncology nurse can provide.
I hope your summer is good and safe and I will look forward to seeing you in September.
Sharlene Bence
