VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTION
This document describes the main aspects of the volunteer role and any particular skills or experience that will be needed to successfully carry out the role
TITLE: Sewing & Knitting Group Volunteer
We hold a sewing and knitting group for blind and partially sighted adults at our Balham Resource Centre. The group is weekly on a Monday morning from 10.30am to 1pm, however some time to set up and tidy up is needed so volunteers are needed for approx. 15 mins either side of this. The group is run by a regular volunteer so this is more of a supportive role to assist. We would prefer volunteers to attend weekly but if they cannot then a regular fortnightly role would be acceptable,
Main Aspects of the role
· Volunteers set up for the social group, preparing refreshments and setting up activities and tidy up once the group is over
· Volunteers meet, greet and support people who are blind or partially sighted to find their way around the venue
· Volunteers support people to take part in the group, which might include introducing people to each other, general conversation, helping to follow a pattern, starting them off on a stitch, explaining where they are in the knitting/sewing design
Skills, experience and qualities needed
· You need to be lively, cheery and welcoming
· You should enjoy spending time with people and find it easy to start and keep up conversations
· You will need to be alert and able to keep an eye on situations so that you can offer help when its needed
· You don’t need to have experience of supporting people who are blind or partially sighted as we will provide training and support
· You need to be comfortable volunteering in an environment where guide dogs may be present.
What you will learn and achieve
· A good understanding of how to support people who are blind or partially sighted
· A chance to do something positive and give something to your local community
· Attend some great activities and have fun
· The opportunity to demonstrate your communication and organisation skills which looks great on a CV
We can provide references for all our committed volunteers after two months or eight episodes of volunteering. We can reimburse essential travel expenses in London (zones 1 to 6)
