SPEAKERS

Pamela Harper~ Gardener, Lecturer, Writer, Photographer~ Seaford, VA

Harper began gardening in 1955 in England where she grew hundreds of different plants. Her interests extend over the whole range of hardy ornamental plants. Her articles and photographs have appeared in many American and English horticulture publications. She is the owner of the Harper Horticultural Slide Library, which contains about 100,000 slides of plants and gardens. She has published five books including her most recent, Time Tested Plants (Timber Press). She has also won two awards from the Garden Writers Association of America, and was given the Horticultural Writing Award of the American Horticultural Society for “beautiful images in photos and words.”

Catriona Tudor Erler~ Author, Lecturer, Photographer~ Charlottesville, VA

Erler is an internationally recognized garden writer, photographer, and speaker and the author of nine garden books, including Design Ideas for Home Landscaping, Poolscaping, and Complete Home Landscaping. Her numerous articles and photographs have appeared in such publications as Architectural Digest and Southern Accents. Erler gardens with her husband and twins in Virginia.

Frank Uzel – Horticultural Technician, Virginia Tech

Uzel assists with the research project on bare root planting being conducted by Bonnie Appleton at Virginia Tech. He will speak on methods of bare root planting, the reasoning behind bare root planting, and issues we face with many nursery-grown trees. He is also a Virginia Beach Master Gardener, Tree Steward and Water Steward.

Kennon Williams~ Senior Project Manager/Designer with Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects~ Charlottesville, VA Williams has worked on a wide range of projects in this country and abroad. A number of these projects have been recognized for integrating environmental preservation/restoration with civic design. He is particularly interested in site design that supports biodiversity and sustainable site hydrology. He has lectured and served as an expert on panels related to these topics. Prior to joining Nelson Byrd Woltz, he worked on projects for the Nature Conservancy and Biohabitats.

Michael Abbott~ Certified Arborist for Bartlett Tree Experts~ Charlottesville, VA

Abbott is an enthusiastic speaker who is well-known for his knowledge and love of trees. He has cared for special trees on many of Virginia’s historic properties. He received an MS in Forestry from MichiganStateUniversity, has worked at a large wholesale tree nursery, and has been an arborist for Bartlett Tree Experts for the last 8 years. He is also a Past President of Piedmont Landscape Association. He resides in NelsonCounty with his wife and 3 children.
