Piney Branch PTA Meeting

January 4, 2007

The General Member meeting of the Piney Branch PTA was held on January 4, 2007 at the Piney Branch Elementary School. The President called the meeting to order at 7:05pm. Following an introduction of the meetings topics; the Piney Branch Staff Presentation began.

PBES STAFF PRESENTATION:

The topic “How to Help When Your Child Struggles” was discussed in detail to include handouts. For instance a handout was reviewed which detailed strategies for assisting students with reading comprehension. In addition; extensive discussion ensued about school interventions. Besides IEP (Individual Education Program) and 504 plans the following was reviewed:

ESOL

  • Out of class instruction and extra support (skill building)
  • Language learning on two levels: Social & Academic
  • Collaboration with students homeroom teacher

CAP (Collaboration Action Process)

  • Grade level talks: Teachers of each grade get together to talk about students in their classes. Parents can ask to attend this meeting.
  • Cross communication between teachers allow identification of ongoing issues with a student
  • Parental involvement occurs if an issue is identified.

PTA NEWS:

  • Treasurer’s Report: Blair King; Treasurer shared that the budget is in good shape. The election bake sale and other items made up for the difference for the shortfall with Sally Foster fundraiser. There are four additional fundraisers left this year.
  • Secretary’s Report: Cynthia Bangali, Secretary asked members to review the minutes for feedback and approval. Each month a draft of the minutes will be posted to the PTA website one to two weeks before the next meeting for those who would like to review them before hand. Minutes approved.
  • President’s Report: Sue Katz Miller, PTA President appealed for volunteers to help with auditing the books and editing the bylaws. Black History night will occur in lieu of PTA meeting in February. Everyone encouraged to attend.

ADVOCATING FOR SUPPORT FOR YOUR CHILD-A parent perspective:

PTA Special Resources Liaison; Samantha Shofar shared about her experience as a parent going through the process of having concerns about her daughter learning and the journey of helping her get the support she needed to excel A handout was provided.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT: Mrs. Valencia shared that….

  • Ms. Rosemary Garr is an excellent starting point for parents who might have concerns about their childs learning.
  • January is “Peace month”. The focus is on anti-bullying and effective communication.
  • Sad news: A 5th graders father has passed away. The family could use additional support. For those interested in making a contribution to the family in their time of mourning; make checks payable to PBES and give the check to Mrs. Valencia or Ms. Rini.
