An independent business owner, Mr. Reed started his first business as Douglass C. Reed Housewrights building and restoring traditional log houses in 1972. By 1977 incorporated as Preservation Associates, Inc. and expanded into a full range of services offered from National Register Nominations, historic and cultural resource surveys, consulting, condition assessments and preparation of historic structure reports, educational courses given atmany locations such as the Chautauqua Institute in New York, Cornell University, Columbia University, Shepherd University, Corcoran College of Art and Designand local community colleges. Mr. Reed is a sought after speaker for state and national conferences. Reed has 44 years of experience as a vernacular architectural historian, craftsman and technical consultant to architects, engineers and owners on a wide range of historic building types. He is a specialist in historic materials conservation as well as the Secretary of the Interior’s various and evolving Standards. Mr.Reed has been in the forefront of developing the investigative processes used for initial condition assessments of historic structures. The forensics analysis of structures utilizing all disciplines is the bulk of the information incorporated into historicstructures reports. Mr. Reed has also conducted many proforma analyses for a wide range of buildings to measure their economic viability for reuse in the private and government sectors. Mr. Reed targets saving derelict buildings, creates adaptive reuses for under-utilized buildings and is uniquely qualified and experienced at unobtrusively inserting modern infrastructures into historic buildings. Reed was one of the first practitioners of preservation in the US to see the value of carbon footprint analysis in selling preservation and repurposing of older buildings versus demolition and building new.

Current Areas of Practice

Reed closed his construction business specializing in accurate restoration of log and other types of historic buildings in 2015. Since 2007 he has been increasing his consulting and research that has reached all over the world tracing the earliest known sources for log crib structures and its development and diffusion since 2010. Reed has physically inspected log structures intensively all over the eastern and most of the western states in the US, and performed field studies in Canada, Turkey, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. He is currently researching historic log crib practices throughout other parts of Europe and the world. In order to more accurately describe the processes of log crib construction, he attended a hands-on 10 day workshop focused on traditional log construction techniques in Estonia in 2014. He recently completed a three month study grant of the Baltic nations provided by the EU. He has delivered a presentation on a "World Survey of Historic Log Construction Practices" at Estonia's Tartu University of Life Sciences and a second presentation by invitation at theDepartment of Estonian Native Crafts, University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy both in September 2015. His US research continues with multiple trips and consultations taking him all over the lower 48 states and Central Europe in 2016.
