Salary Information:

$14.54 per hour. Part-Time or Full-Time term position with benefits until project completion.

Description:
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (NGPC) photo library houses approximately 2000 color film transparencies illustrating Nebraska’s saline wetlands, taken by commission staff during the 1980s and 1990s. The images visually document historical changes to one of the most unique and threatened wetland communities in Nebraska. Pheasants Forever, Inc. (PF), NGPC, and the Saline Wetland Conservation Partnership (SWCP) seek a digital imagery staff assistant to assist with preserving and making publically accessible this unique collection of photographs. Digitizing the collection will not only preserve these valuable, film-based assets, but also offer new opportunities for the study and advocacy of an important and endangered Nebraska eco-region.

Duties:

Work in a joint capacity with PF, NGPC,and the SWCP to digitize NEBRASKAland Magazine- and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission-owned photography related to Nebraska saline wetlands. The successful candidate will:Handle, catalog, and scan film transparencies using Epson and Nikon scanners.Transcribe and/or write descriptions of photographs following metadata standards. Research and apply standardized naming conventions for geographical regions within Nebraska. Embed metadata into image files using Photo Mechanic or Adobe Bridge. Process and upload image files into NGPC’s digital asset management system using MerlinOne software. Coordinate and communicate with project partners. Work closely with the Nebraska Game and Parks Photo Librarian. Potential exists for coordinating with other entities regarding additional saline wetlands media collections for possible digitization. There is also potential to research and develop ideas for creating a digital research project incorporating the digitized media files and surrounding metadata.

Special Note:

The candidate will work with the NGPC Photo Librarian at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission headquarters in Lincoln on a daily or weekly basis to complete the duties listed above. Position will communicate schedule, activities, and progress regularly with Pheasants Forever and the Saline Wetland Conservation Partnership. Updates may be presented at quarterly partnership meetings.This is a term position that will conclude when the specific project is complete.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be detail-oriented and have strong computing skills.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, and writing skills.
  • Proficiency with or willingness to learn Microsoft Excel, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, Photo Mechanic, and FTP software.
  • Familiarity with photo and document scanners and corresponding software.
  • Familiarity with IPTC metadata standards, GIS, and strong interest and knowledge of the history and conservation of Nebraska saline wetlands desirable.
  • Ability to lift 15-lbs.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Training and Experience Guidelines:

Strong interest, college coursework, training, and/or experience in the digital humanities, natural resources, digital librarianship, photography, or related field preferred. Ability to use a personal computer, scanning equipment, and related software listed above.
