FREEDOM MARCHES INTO THE 20TH CENTURY
/ Teddy Roosevelt's patrician reforms, Henry Ford's well-paid automobile assembly workers, and pacifist Wilson's intervention in World War I are a few examples of the contradictory signs of a country moving toward uncertain new freedoms. Women marched until they got the vote. New civil liberties emerged while others were suppressed. Booming economic prosperity lasted until 1932, when the crash threatened everyone's freedom. (20:00)
FREE AT LAST? WWII & AFTER
/ World War II created weapons and wealth of unprecedented scale. But, soon the McCarthy political witch hunts will recall the Salem witch trials. At the same time, the Civil Rights Movement also begins, which reaches its mythic summit with Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech, and its political peak with the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. But, political and social conflicts haven't stopped; the quest for equality and freedom continues. (20:00)
