Mrs H W Templeton
Mrs Winifred Templeton was a dominant figure of women’s hockey in Northern Ireland for 45 years. She became Secretary of the Ulster Women’s Hockey Union in 1932, a post she held until her death in 1977. She saw the Ulster Branch grow from very small beginnings to become the largest branch in Ireland. Her special interest lay in the continuing development of school hockey and on this sure foundation Ulster hockey flourished.
In 1965 Mrs Templeton became President of the Irish Ladies Hockey Union and was honoured with this office once again in 1976. For many years she was Secretary of the Umpires’ Association and was herself an international umpire.
Mrs Templeton and Victorians Hockey Club were inexorably linked, she being a founder member of the Club in 1934 and its President for over 30 years. Many hours were spent at Victoria College coaching and umpiring for the schools teams and she was a driving force in the Old Girls fund-raising for their Centenary gift to the school – the all-weather pitch, one of the first in Ireland.
Her superb organisation and administrative ability were renowned and her unstinting devotion and dedication to the sport were justly rewarded when she was honoured with the MBE in l962.
