Before you begin
Description
/- Spent aerosol cans
Category
/ Aerosol cans (used in crew quarters) are considered domestic trash.Aerosol cans (used in industrial application) must be emptied, and then recycled as scrap metal.
Aerosol cans which contained a hazardous waste are considered empty when:
- The pressure in the container approaches atmospheric 40 CFR 261.7 (b) (2)
- It is considered a State and Federally regulated hazardous waste
Analysis
/- No laboratory analysis required
- Identification by ingredients on label and Material Safety Data Sheet, MSDS
Accumulation
/- Use can until empty.
- Empty (depressurized) cans may be placed in scrap metal bin or trash.
Waste Reduction
/- Use all of contents. If this is done, no other requirements in this section are needed.
- Order only the quantity needed.
- Emptied (depressurized) cans may be recycled as scrap metal.
Disposal
/- If empty: the cans can be ship to an approved scrap metal recycler or discarded in trash bins destined for a landfill.
- If not empty: contact EH&S Department and provide a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
Recordkeeping
/ If non-hazardous (Empty):- List on General Cargo Manifest as scrap metal (if with scrap metal)or trash
- List in the Hazardous Materials section (Section I) of the Shipping Manifest prior to transportation. Refer to any other tab in this manual (such as “Paint”) which covers the material in the can.
- Maintain a copy of manifest offshore and at the shore base facilities while shipping papers are active. Send the original manifest with the shipment.
- Retain record for three years.
Shipping Instructions: EMPTY AEROSOL CANS
1.Call OR FAX Dock/Base to schedule shipment.
2.Package Empty(depressurized) Aerosol cans as follows:
a.Place empty (depressurized) can in scrap metal basket.
- Mark Package:
- No DOT marking is required for empty (depressurized) aerosol can
- Stencil Container Apache” and the generator’s location (i.e. EugeneIsland 158)
4.Label Package:
a.No DOT label is required for empty aerosol can
5.Prepare shipping papers:
a.Complete entry in General Cargo section of the Apache Shipping Manifest (See example).
6.Placard Vehicle/Vessel:
a.No DOT label is required for empty aerosol can.
7.Load cargo in accordance with the following shipping limitations:
AIR / RESTRICTIONS (49 CFR 172.101)Passenger Aircraft / No Restrictions.
Cargo Aircraft / No Restrictions.
WATER / RESTRICTIONS (49 CFR 172.101)
Cargo and Passenger Vessels / No Restrictions.
Other Requirements / None.
8.Include MSDS with shipment.
Shipping Instructions:
AEROSOL CANS ( Containing Flammable Materials - such as Engine Starting Fluid)
1.Call OR FAX Dock/Base to schedule shipment.
2.Package Aerosol cans containing engine starting fluid as follows:
a.Secure valve cap when applicable.
- Mark Package:
- Aerosols, flammable, n.o.s. (engine starting fluid) (each not exceeding 1 Liter [1 quart] capacity), 2.1, UN 1950
- Stencil Container -“Apache” and the generator’s location (i.e. EugeneIsland 158)
4.Label Package:
a."Flammable Gas" label near the marking in 3.a. (above).
5.Prepare shipping papers:
a.Complete entry in Hazardous Materials Section [Section I] of the Apache Shipping Manifest (See example).
b.The material description, Aerosols, flammable, n.o.s. (engine starting fluid) (each not exceeding 1 Liter [1 quart] capacity), should be written in a blank line of Section I. Example: Enter the number “126” in column headed “Emergency Response Guide (See below).
6.Placard Vehicle/Vessel:
a.For cargoes less than 1000 pounds: No Placard required on transport vehicle.
b.See attached placard.
7.Load cargo in accordance with the following shipping limitations:
AIR / RESTRICTIONS (49 CFR 172.101)Passenger Aircraft / Forbidden
Cargo Aircraft / Forbidden
WATER / RESTRICTIONS
Cargo and passenger vessels / May be stowed on deck or under deck.
Other Requirements / Stow Clear of Living Quarters.
Stow away from sources of heat.
Under deck stowage must be in mechanically ventilated space.
Stow in a well-ventilated cabinet designed for flammable materials.
8.Include MSDS with shipment.
Shipping Instructions:
AEROSOL CANS (Containing Non-flammable material)
1.Call OR FAX Dock/Base to schedule shipment.
2.Package Aerosol cans containing non-flammable fluid as follows:
a.Secure valve cap when applicable.
- Mark Package:
- Aerosols, non-flammable, (each not exceeding 1 Liter [1 quart] capacity), 2.2, UN 1950
- Stencil Container -“Apache” and the generator’s location (i.e. EugeneIsland 158)
4.Label Package:
a."Non-flammable Gas" label near the marking in 3.a. (above).
5.Prepare shipping papers:
a.Complete entry in Hazardous Materials Section [Section I] of the Apache Shipping Manifest (See example).
6.Placard Vehicle/Vessel:
a.For cargoes less than 1000 pounds: No Placard required on transport vehicle.

7.Load cargo in accordance with the following shipping limitations:
