Board Member Job Descriptions

Besides being members of the board, several of our board members will be asked to take on additional responsibilities as office holders and/or committee members. Here are some of the responsibilities associated with specific board positions:

PRESIDENT

  • Serves as the head of the Council
  • Is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors unless it is to break a tie.
  • Provides leadership to the Board of Directors.
  • Chairs meetings of the board of Directors.
  • Develops the agenda with the Vice President and Secretary for the meetings.
  • Appoints committee chairs, in consultation with other board members.
  • Serves as a member of committees, and attends their meetings when invited.
  • Discusses with the Vice President, issues of concern to the board or the organization.
  • Monitors financial planning and financial reports.
  • Plays a leading role in fundraising activities.
  • Calls the monthly Board of Directors Meeting to order.
  • Keeps order in the meetings.

Vice President

  • Is a member of the Board of Directors.
  • Is typically a successor to the President.
  • Reports to the President.
  • Performs Presidents responsibilities when the President cannot be available.
  • Works closely with the President and other staff.

Secretary

  • Is a member of the Board of Directors
  • Along with the president, makes up the meeting agenda and distributes at the meeting.
  • Takes Roll Call at each Board of Directors Meeting and records them in the Minutes. Absences are also to be recorded.
  • Takes the minutes at each of the monthly Board of Directors meetings
  • Manages minutes of board meetings – Keep in a Binder attached to notes, agenda and approved minutes as well as any additions or corrections to the minutes, and/or any copies of reports or items brought up in the meeting.

Treasurer

  • Is a member of the Board of Directors.
  • Manages the finances of the organization.
  • Submits a report in writing at every meeting with the Beginning Balance, Ending Balance and a description of expenses and income. A copy is to be given to the Secretary at every meeting.
  • Maintains a ledger of all income and expenses.

Membership Director

  • Is a member of the Board.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Communication skills are important since the membership director must be able to communicate with new members.
  • Have the time needed to recruit new members.

Community Service

  • Plans, organizes and directs the operations of the Community Services Committee.
  • Meets with Board to coordinate projects, programs, resolves issues, and plan events.
  • Reviews community needs and other factors in choosing community events to participate in.
  • Develops and monitors partnerships with outside agencies to build relationships and partner in community activities.

Fund Raising / Special Events Director

  • The primary goal of a fund-raising director is to develop and implement a fund-raising strategy to secure revenue for the organization.
  • Try to have a targeted dollar amount to meet each year through various fund-raising efforts such as direct mail campaigns, writing proposals to obtain grants or securing endowments.
  • Responsible for presenting ideas to the Board for approval.
