JOB SUMMARY:

Assist patients and staff of the entire hospital with the completion of tasks specifically related to patient transport, patient care, and patient satisfaction in alignment with Medical Center's mission and vision statements.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists with or transports patients from one nursing unit hospital room to another nursing unit or treatment and testing areas according to proper techniques of body mechanics to protect patient and staff's personal safety and ensure patient satisfaction.
Assist nurses and technicians in moving patients in a bed, litter, or wheelchair, to another unit within the hospital due to change in level of care or treatment plan.
Displays a calm and caring approach with patients, visitors and coworkers. Responds in a friendly and cooperative manner.
Self directed/motivated to provide the very best care to patients prior, during, and after transport from one nursing unit to another.
Demonstrates competencies to provide care to specific patient populations (neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric) as defined by the level of care required, technology utilized and department scope of care.
Candidate will project a positive image of the Medical Center with a focus on customer/stakeholder relations, i.e. appearance, communication, demeanor.
Help patients with toileting, and various other personal care needs to provide optimal comfort.
Handles and operates hospital equipment i.e. stretchers, wheelchairs, IV pumps, and other patient equipment with care and per hospital policy.
Complies with Medical Center's Dress Code at all times.
Make copies of the daily day schedule/ update and reschedule transports as needed with a focus on flexibility.
Assist in settling patient on new unit by unpacking pertinent belongings. Establishes a neat and clean environment for the patient upon arrival to new unit i.e organizes over bed table, bedside stand, and closet.
Inventories belongings in nursing unit to nursing unit transports, reports discrepancies to nurse manager or patient relations representative as needed.
Demonstrates responsibility for observation of patient's mental and physical condition and applies safety restraints and measures per policy.
Willingly assists coworkers and fosters teamwork. Assists in orientation of new personnel as assigned.
Reports any observations, patient complaints, and pertinent information regarding the condition of the patient to the charge nurse on respective units.
Assists with general nursing care, when necessary, such as positioning, lifting, turning, ambulating patient, applying anti-embolism devices, prosthetics, orthotics and traction devices.
Meets expectations of MC's performance standards. Performs other duties as required in relation to function.
Must possess ability to successfully interact with stakeholder (patients, providers, payors and community) and other customers, families, staff, management physicians and general public.
Maintains confidentiality of all patient-hospital or physician-related information. Demonstrates knowledge of nursing and hospital policies, i.e. safety, universal precautions, infection control, scripting, etc. Recognizes how the Patient Transport technician position and duties relate to the overall function of the hospital in view of total patient care. Consistently organizes and prioritizes workload to assure optimal patient care in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

High school graduate or equivalent (GED) preferred. Satisfactory completion of an approved nurse’s aide course or PMC’s clinical transport class required and is completed within 90 days of employment, or students enrolled in an approved RN or LPN program with completion of nursing fundamentals.
Six (6) months previous demonstrated experience as an orderly/CNA preferred.
Patient care experience is preferred.
Current CPR cardis required within ninety- (90) days of employment.
Must have effective communication skills/command of English language. Must be able to interact effectively with all levels of Medical Center’s patients/customers, management, physicians, staff, families and the general public.
Must possess ability to prioritize and use time effectively.
One (1) to three (3) months on-the-job training

COMPETENCIES:
Participates as team member in mock/actual code and rapid response.
Isolation Precautions
Reviews policy and procedure for isolation.
Restraints.
Uses de-escalation interventions first.
Applies/maintains restraints according to PMC policy with physician order:
Documents correctly on restraint checklist.
Demonstrates age-specific care strategies when applying/reducing restraints.
Skin Care/Pressure Ulcer/Wound Care.
Reviews policy and procedure; Completes appropriate documentation.
Net Learning

Completes all computerized modules as assigned.
Completes self-learning packets for above job description competencies as necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to infectious patients.
Exposure to contaminated specimens.
Must be able to attend in-services/functions/seminars both inside and outside of Medical Center.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to stand/walk up to 80% of shift.
Must be able to sit up to 10% of shift.
Must be able to bend up to 20% of shift.
Must be able to lift/carry equipment and/or supplies weighing up to 30 lbs.
Must be able to assist in repositioning patients weighing various weights.
Must be able to utilize keyboard and view computer screen up to 10% of shift.
Must have good visual and hearing acuity.
