9th grade Lesson Plans for ICAP

Ninth Grade Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP):

“Exploring Me”

Learning Targets:

1.  Students will explore their interests to find career clusters and/or careers that interest them and examine the high school plan of study that supports their chosen career.

2.  Students will understand the requirements for graduation and college entrance while discovering appropriate post-secondary options.

3.  Students will set academic goals for during and after high school.

Colorado State ICAP Required Elements Met:

1.  Documentation of the student’s efforts in exploring careers, including: a written post-secondary and workforce goal for the student; yearly benchmarks for reaching that goal, interest surveys that the student completes, and anticipated postsecondary studies.

2.  An intentional sequence of courses reflecting progress toward accomplishment of the student’s postsecondary and workforce objectives.

3.  Other data reflecting student progress toward postsecondary and workforce readiness, including the student’s understanding of the financial impact of postsecondary education.

ASCA Standards Addressed:

1.  Academic Standard B: Students will complete school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college.

2.  Academic Standard C: Students will understand the relationship of academics to the world of work and to life at home and in the community.

3.  Career Development Standard A: Students will acquire the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions.

4.  Career Development Standard B: Students will employ strategies to achieve future career goals with success and satisfaction.

5.  Career Development Standard C: Students will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training and the world of work.

6.  Personal/Social Development Standard B: Students will make decisions, set goals and take necessary action to achieve goals.

Activities:

1.  Explain the graduation requirements and the differences between college entrance (HEAR) requirements and graduation requirements using the “Freshman 4-Year Plan”, “GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS”, and “Four Year Planning Guide” handouts. ***You can also save paper by using the attached Power Point

2.  Show them how to log in to their Naviance accounts.

3.  Have all the students complete the “Cluster Finder” survey in Naviance and add careers/clusters that they are interested in to their profiles (click “add to my list”.)

4.  To assess their understanding of the material presented, have students complete the “MCVSD 51 Freshman 4-Year Plan” survey in Naviance.

5.  Explain the difference between the different types of degrees using “Getting education after high school pays” handout and/or the slide in the attached Power Point entitled “Education Pays” (slide 5)

6.  Have students add any post-secondary schools that they are interested in to their profile.
