Aims / The module will enable the student to critically analyse the full extent of the midwife’s role and develop their midwifery practice in order to be prepared for practice
Learning outcomes/objectives / On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:
  1. Critically analyse the challenges and responsibilities of the midwife as an autonomous practitioner
  2. Through reflection critically analyse the development of interpersonal and midwifery skills and the ability to provide holistic and women-centred care for women babies and their families.
  3. Proactively set goals and action plans for personal and career development to ensure fitness to practice

  • The concept of risk in childbirth and clinical governance

  • Portfolio as a framework for personal and career development including approaches for self and peer assessment and PREP
  • Developing critical awareness of local and national guidelines

Teaching and learning strategies / The learning outcomes will be supported through lectures; enquiry based learning using case studies and peer presentation and review.
Sessions will be facilitated by midwifery lecturers in collaboration with service users and midwifery managers and clinicians.

Assessment tasks / Students will submit a portfolio which should include a range of evidence demonstrating their development as an autonomous midwife. The student will be required to map the contents of their portfolio against the module learning outcomes.

Brief description of module content / This module has been developed to integrate and develop all course components to demonstrate the holistic role of the midwife in contemporary practice. It focuses on the autonomy of the practising midwife; reflection, critical analysis and evaluation of midwifery practice are integral parts of this module.
