Meet Mrs. Richardson- I have enjoyed teaching for 19 years, and I must say, every year is more challenging but more fun! I taught for 13 years in Henry County, VA. I have experience teaching first, fourth, and third graders, but THIRD GRADE is definitely my favorite!
My family moved to the Forest area July of 2007 after my husband accepted a position at Sam Moore Furniture. We have enjoyed becoming familiar with the Forest / Lynchburg area. It has been a great move for us! I have one daughter, Cassie, who is a rising 6th grader at Forest Middle School. In August of 2010, we added a new member to our household! We love Jackson, our black cocker spaniel!
‘NO FOOD SHARING’ policy: In an effort to be more health and safety conscious, TJES has revised our ‘no food sharing’ policy. There will be no snack or food sharing in the classroom or cafeteria – this includes birthdays. Please see your TJES handbook for more details!
Snacks-** We will have a light snack mid-morning each day in order to tide your child over until lunch. Please send in a healthy snack for your child to enjoy (no candy or sugar ‘infested’ treats such as “fruit gushers” or “fruit roll ups” PLEASE). Your child will have access to the classroom water fountain, so bringing in drinks is not necessary! In recent years, the scheduled snack time has phased itself out due to resource scheduling!
*Snack time may be phased out as our objectives become more rigorous and the students adapt to the classroom routine!
Monday Folders- Each Monday, your child will bring home (some) of his/her work from the previous week, memos from the office, PTA notifications, study guides, etc. Some work may be kept at school to be shared with parents on Portfolio Night. There will be a form in the Return to School pocket (left-hand side of folder) for you to initial/sign each Monday evening and return to school on Tuesday. Please take the time to look through your child’s work and let me know of any concerns/suggestions that you may have.
Monday Memo-Our classroom memo, The Richardson Register, will be in each Monday folder. You will find the objectives for the week, resource schedules, and a reminder calendar of upcoming events for parents. Please keep this memo at home. If you would like to receive the memo electronically, please fill out your name and e-mail address on back page of booklet, and I will make sure you receive the memo via e-mail.
A copy of the most recent Monday memo will also be on my website.
Behavior Expectations/Classroom Control
Rules:
*follow oral directions the first time they are given
*come to class prepared
Have needed supplies, homework, agenda, etc
*keep hands, feet, and other objects to yourself
*be kind and respectful to others; be a responsible student in the entire school
*speak during class discussions; don’t interrupting small groups in word study, reading, or math

Class work and homework
Make sure the assignment/activity has been completed

*In addition to the rules of our classroom, the students are still expected to follow the school expectations. These are posted in our hallway on the 2-3 hall. If a rule should be broken on the bus, in the cafeteria, or in a resource room, the student will be asked to change his/her color for this broken rule (if reported to Mrs. Richardson by an ADULT, not another classmate/peer).
Consequences:
The student will ‘change their color’ on the pocket chart if a rule is broken. Everyday, the students will start off their day with a GREEN card!
The colors and consequences are as follows:
Consequence / Color1st time / Warning / Yellow
2nd time / Loss of sticker on behavior chart (+ cons. of #1) / Orange
3rd time / Call/note sent home regarding behavior (+ cons. of #2) / Blue
4th time / Silent Lunch and loss of recess time (+ cons. of #3) / Purple
5th time / See Principal (+ cons. of #4) / Red
Rewards: Every four weeks, your child will be eligible for Fun Friday Afternoon! After our reading block on Fridays,(and possibly in place of recess), your child will be able to play the Wii on the SmartBoard, bring his/her Nintendo DS, etc. to have fun! The student must have Es only in his/her Monday folder to earn this afternoon! **see behavior grade on below.
Behavior Grade:
Behavior grades for the prior week will be placed in the Monday folder as follows –
0-2 color changes for the week - E
3-5 color changes for the week- S
6-7 color changes for the week- N
8 or more changes for the week - U
Any child who has earned a S, N, or U will have the explanations of that behavior grade listed in his/her Monday folder!
Homework Basics-
*Each day (Monday – Thursday) the students will write their daily homework assignments in their agenda. This will be done from the morning work assignments posted (and saved) on the SmartBoard.
*Homework will be written down in the mornings as part of your child’s entry task in the. When necessary, the assignments will be posted on the SmartBoard in the afternoons prior to pack-up time.
*Homework will be given Monday-Thursday, and should be returned the following day (if not noted in agenda AND Monday memo for the week). Ex: If a child is given a math assignment-> complete the following pattern and a page from the Lang. Arts workbook, both are due the following day.
*I do take the time to get the students ‘started’ on their homework assignment. I may review odd answers to lang. arts activities or complete the first 3-4 questions/problems with them -depending upon the assignment.
This is to ensure that homework is:
1- practice/reinforcement of a known skill…not busy work!!
2-on the child’s independent level
3-If, for some reason, your child experienced a ‘bad night’- and we ALL have them- please send me a note or e-mail explaining why the homework assignment was not completed. Keep in mind that the homework should be turned in the following day(s)-depending upon the circumstance. If a parent note/e-mail accompanies the child without his/her homework, a ‘color change’ will not occur. If a note/e-mail doesn’t accompany the assignment, a color will be changed- see **come to class prepared in the “Rules” area of the booklet.
P.E./ Recess Reminders- Please make sure that you or your child check your the resource schedule to ensure that he/she wears- or has in a book bag- a pair of tennis shoes. Tennis shoes/sneakers will be needed on non-P.E. days, as well. Your child will be running the mile this year in the fall and in the spring. In preparation for the mile run, your child will need these shoes to practice his/her physical endurance for the run. Each day, third graders at TJ are required to run five laps around the blacktop behind the school. I strongly encourage the children to run at an easy pace on the days that weather permits for us to do so.
New this year – NO FLIP FLOPS or ‘Backless Shoes’
