YEAR 5CURRICULUM PLANNING AUTUMN TERM

Alongside work in these subjects, we encourage children to: practise their spelling rules and patterns;regularly rehearse their times tables and number bonds; and read at least 6 out of 7 days a week, recording what they read in their Homework Diary.

AUTUMN ONE- FIRST HALF TERM
Mathematics /

To understand place value up to 1,000,000
Addition and subtraction – To practise mental strategies and written procedures, including problem solving with up to and more than 4 digits
To understand that angles are measured in degrees
To recognise and convert fractions, including mixed numbers and improper fractions
To calculate area and perimeter of shapes
To draw and interpret bar and line graphs

English /

To use spoken language to develop understanding through speculating, hypothesising, imagining and exploring ideas
To develop retrieval, inference and deduction skills through guided reading sessions
To listen to and discuss a range of fiction including a class reading book
To develop the use of adverbs and verbs, including modal verbs
To select appropriate grammar and vocabulary, understanding how such choices can change and enhance meaning

Creative Curriculum
The Final Frontier / Science

To plan different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions, including recognising and controlling variables where necessary.
To understand how the movement of the Earth causes day and night
To measure the length of shadows
To investigate the Earth’s orbit of the Sun
To research the relative size and distance of planets in the solar system

History

To explore the significance of the stars to people through history

Art

To experiment with colour mixing to create tints and shades inspired by Ton Schulten

To multiply and divide 4 digit numbers by a 1- or 2- digit number
To read and write decimal numbers as fractions
To convert between different units of metric measure, and solve problems involving measure

To participate in discussions, presentations, performances, role play, improvisations and debates
To read books that are structured in different ways and read for a range of purposes
To use relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, whose
To identify audience and purpose, selecting appropriate form and use other similar writing as a model
