Brief description of module content and/ or aims
Overview (max 80 words) / This module considers local and systemic pathology and examine how these factors influence their professional practice.
Students will also consider the fundamental role of microbiology in the context of their professional practice.

MODULE AIMS, ASSESSMENT AND SUPPORT

Aims / ·  To enable students to appraise the pathophysiology of the major body systems
·  To enable students to evaluate their understanding of the effects of tissue damage in systemic pathology.
·  To allow students to explore microbiology in the context of their professional practice
Learning outcomes / On successful completion of the module students will be able to;
1.  Critically evaluate the pathophysiology underlying local and systemic disease
2.  synthesize the effects of co-existing pathologies of the major body systems on morbidity
3.  analyse critically the role of microbiology in the context of their professional practice.
Content /
Pathology
- inflammation, wound healing and factors affecting the healing process
- immunology; anaphylaxis and allergy
- effects of cell and tissue damage; necrosis and infarction; degeneration and atrophy; hyperplasia and metaplasia
Systems pathology
A review of the pathophysiology affecting the major body systems
Microbiology
- normal skin flora; effects of age, body site, skin disease
- epidemiology; vectors; methods of carriage and spread
- factors affecting pathogenicity
- factors affecting microbial inhibition
Learning support / Students will receive support from the module co-ordinator and module team, in addition to Information Services and student central.
