Methods:
Students should read the excerpt from the article Concrete Poetry: A World View. After reading the article invite students to explain what they think is meant by “concrete poem.” Students should come to the conclusion that concrete poetry is a word art without rules that conveys emotion. Explain that this week the class will be learning about types of concrete poems.
· Do students see a possible connection between music, music videos and concrete poetry?
· How do we create new meaning with images and symbols?
· How is meaning intensified?
Explain that the class will be exploring how sound and images can change/intensify the meaning of poems. The changes in each student group’s interpretations will be recorded on the Reading Think-Aloud Sheet.
Online Investigation:
· Students will work in pairs or groups of three.
· Each student group will view the following poems - they are also included in the teacher’s copy of explore+discuss.doc.
