Detailed Procedure:

00:00-00:06 Introduction

PP’s walk into the room and sit down towards the middle of the room, right in front of the projector. The skit starts as soon as every PP sits down. Six of the GL’s are the actors in the skit.

Boy 1: Man that program sucked. No one ever listens to us.

Girl 1: Yeah, that service was terrible. It was so unorganized.

Girl 2: What about social action…what a waste of time. I don’t think it helped anybody and certainly not us.

Boy 2: Oh my gosh, our advisor never listens to us. He always just takes over and does his own thing.

Girl 3(stands to the side): That TYG board never works as a team. What an awful group!
Boy 3: Did you see that mixer…it was like she just made it up on the spot. At least be prepared.

Girl 4: Yeah! Our TYG is such a fail. What’s the point?

PL:“FREEZE! What’s the point? NFTY-SW the point is to create leaders that deeply care and use all their qualities and skills to produce the best TYG they possibly can. What are some examples from this skit that shows this TYG isn’t working well together? (Take a couple of responses) As TYG’s you must learn to work together and use your leadership skills to your full potential. But what leadership skills would those be, you may ask? Today, we will focus on the leadership qualities portrayed in some of our favorite movies and will learn how to use those skills in our own Temple Youth Groups. GL’s are standing all around the room holding up numbers. Your nametag should have a number that correlates to one of the GL’s numbers that they are holding up. So roll out the red carpet, get your popcorn ready, and Welcome to Hollywood, where dreams come true.”

(20th century fox intro music plays for about 20 seconds)

00:06-00:08 Travel Time, divide into groups

GL’s sit around the room in number order waiting to receive the PP’S as described above. While PP’s find their GL, movie theme song (Seasons of Love-Rent) is played to get the spirit of the PP’s up. Once every PP finds their group, GL’s will get PP’s quiet for the first movie clip. TYG Advisors will find a group and help out with the discussion.

00:08-00:14 Lion King Movie Clip

“Our first movie clip that we will watch is from the Lion King. In the Lion King, King Mufasa led the pride and all the other animals in their daily lives. Simba, Mufasa’s son, was born and will one day take over the job as King. Scar, Mufasa’s brother, tricked Simba and killed Mufasa which brought guilt and shame to Simba and his family. Simba feltextremely guilty and thinks he was the reason that his father was dead. As the video starts, pay attention to Rafiki and how he guidesSimba to overcome difficulties and fight for what he believed in.”

Play movie clip:

00:14-00:24 Discussion 1

GL transitions group into a discussion on overcoming difficulties and always believing in oneself.

  1. Simba says, “It is my kingdom. If I don’t fight for it, who will?” How does this quote relate to your TYG?
  2. Change is good but not easy, why?
  3. Simba went through many conflicts in the video. What are some real issues you may face this year? (GL: make sure the answers are about issues, not people).
  4. How can you resolve conflicts and still pursue your goals (and the goals of the TYG)?
  5. What did Rafiki do to help Simba? How did he help him?
  6. What leadership qualities did Rafiki use to help Simba?
  7. What role does humor have in a difficult situation?
  8. What resources do you have to help overcome difficult situations?

GL gets group quiet and asks them to face PL for the next video clip.

Pl says, “As leaders we sometimes face rough challenges and difficulties that we do not know how to fix. Or sometimes we get cocky, believing that we are capable of anything. And sometimes we get so overwhelmed we don’t know how to ask for help.Remember who you are as a TYG leader every day and you will go far. You are the king of your life. You are the only one who can keep your domain from falling into disarray. Leaders take responsibility and fight for what is theirs. But no one has to “fight” alone. Every TYG depends on all of its leaders to succeed.”

00:24-00:27 Bruce Almighty Movie Clip

PL continues, “In our next movie clip from Bruce Almighty, Bruce Nolan, a television reporter in Buffalo, N.Y., was discontented with almost everything in life, despite his popularity and the love of his girlfriend Grace. At the end of the worst day of his life, Bruce angrily ridiculed and raged against G-d and G-d responds. G-d appears in human form and, endowing Bruce with divine powers, challenges Bruce to take on the big job to see if he can do it any better. Bruce fails and gives the people everything they want, turning New York into madness and chaos. As the video starts, pay attention to Morgan Freeman and how he talks to Jim Carreyto calm him down.”

Play movie clip:

00:27-00:37 Discussion 2

GL begins discussion again.

  1. How did G-d calm down Bruce? What leadership strategies didG-d use?
  2. In the clip, G-d helps Bruce to fix the problems of NY by cleaning the floor. In what ways did G-d show Bruce how to be a leader?
  3. What does the quote “Be the Miracle” mean to you? How can you use this quote in your daily lives and in your TYG’s?
  4. TYG leadership is about creating community with your membership. You each have the power to accomplish great things with your TYG’S. What obstacles do you feel you have to overcome to be successful?
  5. Communication is a two-way endeavor. In the movie, G-d doesn’t really listen to Bruce; G-d just lets Bruce fail to prove that G-d is a better Deity. How can weencourage the rest of our TYG members to share their ideas and make sure their voices are heard?
  6. TYG Leaders are humans, and humans make mistakes. When you make a mistake this year, what should you do about it?

GL has group come back to the middle of the room for the next video clip.

00:37-00:42 Any Given Sunday

PL says, “Before this next clip plays, I warn you that there will be 2 swear words. An aging football coach finds himself struggling with his personal and professional life while trying to hold his team together. A star quarterback has been knocked out of the game and a naive football player replaces him only to become exposed to the world of sports and become a danger to himself and to his players. Meanwhile, the coach found himself constantly at battle to try to inspire his players.” Throughout the video, pay close attention to how much teamwork matters during his pre-game speech.”

Play movie clip:

00:42-00:50 ActionPlanPass Out

PL holds up paper and says, “In a minute, everything in this room is going to change. In a minute, not yet, all the pieces of paper in my hand will no longer be in my hand, they will be evenly distributed one sheet of paper to each person in this room. In a minute, not yet, all the extra papers will be piled next to me and you will have divided up by TYG. In a minute not yet, if there are less than 3 people here from your TYG, you will meet in this corner. In a minute, not yet, without speaking all of this will occur. How will this be accomplished…up to you! When will this begin? Right now! Go…”

PP’s will grab paper and distribute them across the room. The tasks as stated above will occur. TYG Advisors will follow PP’s and will help create the goals and make sure they are manageable.

“Did you see what happened? I never gave you specific instructions on how to accomplish this task. Yet, people took initiative and grabbed the sheets from my hand and started distributing them. But it wasn’t working out because some of the people weren’t getting it, so other people took the initiative to correct the problem. They weren’t asked nor were they told, they recognized a problem and took action. In your TYG’s you need both types of leaders. You need the people who take the initiative and start projects going and then you need people who will recognize problems and solve them. Good job NFTY-SW! You accomplished this task without direction and without speaking.

Action plan can be found in appendix A.

00:50-01:10 TYG Goals for the Year

“Now please close your eyes. Imagine it is the end of the semester. Every program has been fantastic, every mixer was outstanding, you have as many members as you could dream of, your socials are phenomenal, and your board has worked together as a team. The potential to your TYG seems limitless because every teen in the temple wants to be a member of your youth group. Now open your eyes. Everything that you just imagined can and will become true eventually. Large pieces of paper are now being passed out. As a TYG, you will now create five goals that you are going to accomplish by December. After your five goals are written down, figure out which person is going to help achieve which goal. For example, let’s say KATY wants to have 25 members by December. KATY will need to figure out what each person can do in order to accomplish the goal!Your goal must be so detailed and specific that anybody reading it could actually accomplish it. Now please create your goals and action plans. Once you are all finished, have your TYG return to the center of the room. Go!”

01:10-01:15 Conclusion/Wrap-Up

Go Get it Video

Play movie clip:

PL concludes, “Jesse Jackson once said, “Leaders must be tough enough to fight, tender enough to cry, human enough to make mistakes, humble enough to admit them, strong enough to absorb the pain, and resilient enough to bounce back and keep on moving.” I will guarantee that this year will be difficult. What you just did imagining that perfect TYG is to create a vision of what you want your TYG to look like at the end of the year. The goals and objectives that you just worked on were like the bricks in the path to get you from where you are right now to your ultimate goal. When things go wrong and you find your TYG steering off the path, the leader will say wait a minute and turn everybody around back to the goal. When things go wrong the easy thing is to blame others around you. But a leader will take that initiative and steer the TYG back towards the path and fix the goal without needing praise; they will just know they did the right thing. So Be the Miracle, Believe in Yourself, Use Teamwork, Try, Dream, and Do your Best!”
