REVIEW OF THE YEAR
Stacy Yelland presented a review of our work, which is about supporting local people to make things happen and to improve the neighbourhood in which they live. We do that in a number of ways, top of the list is communication – providing people with the information they need to make decisions but also to celebrate all the great community activism in the area.
Active citizenship is about us all caring about where we live and each other and doing our bit to make things betterand it’s what makes our community and city work. We create spaces for people to come together and share ideas, learn, inspire each other and also build networks, links and connections with their neighbours and the organisations which serve us. And finally, we help residents solve problems that are important locally.
We hope most of you will have seen our community newsletter. We use this to inform, inspire and interest residents. 14,000 copies are hand delivered and the feedback we receive is that people enjoy it but also take action as a result of things they read.
We invest time in a programme of communication to have maximum impact. Our online presence has grown and we now reach more people than ever. Residents and organisations also use Up Our Street online to communicate and promote their activity which is great news!
In the past our work was largely about influencing public services. Since then budgets have been cut and the debate has changed and the focus from policy makers is more about people doing things for themselves.
We want to emphasise the importance in our work of celebrating and recognising the diverse communities in which we live. We want a culture of understanding, commitment to working together and respect to run through everything that we do. We want all the work of Up Our Street to be open to and supportive of everyone in the neighbourhood and that anyone who wants to work with us and each other is welcome.
Stacy thanked everyone for coming andcongratulated all our award winners, and thanked Penny Germon, our Neighbourhood Manager who left in June but who is back with us tonight. Penny was responsible for making sure everything was on track and bringing her amazing positivity and experience to Up Our Street. Stacy then presented Hannah Crudgington and the ‘Happy Easton’ video was played.
