Inquiry Question

How do we create common language as a first step in implementing a school wide positive behavior system?

Process

·  Researched positive behavior systems
·  Implemented common language in assemblies throughout the school year
·  Collected data
·  Based on data, decided to implement common language in one area of the school (recess)
·  Developed recess rules, expectations, consequences for students and staff
·  In the process of having them reviewed by principal and staff

Findings

·  We found that recess needed to be addressed due to a number of concerns about students
·  Common language was needed most in this area
·  We found that each grade level had different rules, consequences, language
·  Our data showed recess was the largest area of concern at our school
·  Data showed that staff supported using common language, expectations, rules, consequences

Recommendations / Next Steps

1.  To make sure our principal and staff members support the common language and expectations that were developed
2.  Make any necessary changes to the common language or expectations
3.  To train and expose all staff members in the new recess rules/ expectations
4.  Implement new recess common language and expectations in September 2012
