Business Items

  • The Business and Journalism Consent Agenda appended below was approved. One course, BMKT 207, Overview of Marketing is pending. It is a careers course. The subcommittee is waiting for a justification with regard to why the course is not at the 100 level. There were several changes to the business curriculum in preparation for the Minor. The hope is that it will be promoted across campus. The 200-level Business Law course will be accepted for the minor for Missoula College transfer students. The Business School's Business Law course is at the 300-level.
  • Given the confusion with how to review / approve crosslisting forms, ASCRC decided to postpone approval of crosslisting courses. A subcommittee consisting of Professors DeBoer, Thibeau, and Weix will review the forms early in the spring semester to be presented at the February Faculty Senate meeting. Approval of the crosslisting courses on the November consent agenda will be rescinded for action in February.
Chair DeBoer will draft a communication regarding crosslisting to help clarify any confusion regarding what the internal workaround actually means. He investigated how another university (Brown) with the same transcripting system handles interdisciplinary programs. He found that Women and Gender Studies did not have a separate rubric, but listed courses from other disciplines required for the core courses.
  • The Education and Fine Arts curriculum consent agenda appended was approved. ARTZ 103, Art for Non-majors was postponed. There appears to be similar courses at MSU and Tech, but the learning outcomes are not available for review. Chair DeBoer will contact OCHE to get the learning outcomes. There is also a program modification for Art that requests the drafting sequence to be an option for a Language Exemption. The form lacked the signature of the Chair in Theatre, but there was also not a language exemption form submitted for review by the General Education Committee. The current language states that the symbolic systems sequence must be required by the major to be eligible for an exemption. Several of the Dance courses are variable credit, but seem to be listed in the CCN matrix. The change was made to repeatability, so these were approved. It was suggested that the long titles be included in the e-curr forms for the Education proposals. The Department can send these to Camie to enter.
  • Chair DeBoer also received an urgent request from Dance. During the last review cycle it introduced co-requisite courses, but this has caused many problems with registration and consequently reduced enrollment significantly. So it would like to review the co-requisite requirements for several courses. Given that this is in the best interest of students and the program ASCRC approved the request and will send it to the Registrar’s Office for immediateaction.
  • The remaining Science and Math Subcommittee items appended were approved. This includes two changes to Missoula College interdisciplinary science courses (SCN rubric) that were not flocked.
  • Several follow-up items from the Humanities Subcommittee were also approved (below). A response from the Honors College is still pending.
  • Professor Weix commented on the title issue involving WGS 263S Women, Men, and Sexuality and ANTY 227 Human Sexuality. Women and Gender Studies is not interested in changing the short title. Human Sexuality is required by HHP majors. Anthropology is no longer interested in teaching it.

The subcommittee clarified the credit hours for the weekend ecosystem experience. It is still waiting for follow-up responses regarding credit hours from NorthWest Connections for two Geography Courses. ASCRC asked to see the clarification regarding academic oversight. The Subcommittee is still deliberating regarding the Study Abroad Courses in Environmental Studies. The requestor will join ASCRC next week to discuss the courses briefly. ASCRC was sent the follow-up material. Chair DeBoer asked members to send any specific questions to him.
