Learning outcomes
This master class is ideal for trainers in their first few years of training but more experienced trainers have found it useful.
By the end of the master class participants will be able to:-
- Use coaching skills in the teaching and supervision of a learner in general practice
- Consider the different roles of a trainer as a supervisor, coach, mentor and assessor
- Reflect on and analyse their own teaching and coaching skills in a one to one situation
- Understand the skills they require to be an educational supervisor and have applied this to GP Specialist training
- Show knowledge of the educational theory relating to curriculum planning and be able to apply this to the delivery of the general practice curriculum
- Demonstrate a creative approach to curriculum planning for a general practice specialist trainee
- Use work place based assessment to inform the curriculum planning and delivery of teaching
Although these are the overall objectives part two of the course is flexible and could alter to reflect needs of the group. In the past we have used the group to develop the skills required to give feedback and resolve some difficult problems trainees present.
The master class has been approved as a module of the certificate of medical education by The University of Central Lancashire. It can be used as an alternative to the consultation master class for those on the certificate program. Non certificate candidates can register to complete the module with the university to gain credits towards a postgraduate certificate.
There will be inter-modular work for all participants but more formal written work for those undertaking the certificate.
The inter modular work will be to produce a video of a supervision session with critique and a curriculum plan for doctors on a specialist training scheme using the GP curriculum.
