PES Families,
I want to thank you all for making the start of the 2016-17 school year such a spectacular one. The energy, enthusiasm and many hundreds of smiles that our students brought to school helped to make for a great opening. I hope you have been following along with the different sources of media: Twitter, Facebook, and our school website as we will be promoting different school events and activities on each of these media sources. We are looking forward to a wonderful school year.

SMALL CHANGE FOR BIG CHANGE—Quarter Bookstore
We will be opening the Quarter Bookstore again this school year on every last Thursday and Friday of the month that we are in school. The bookstore will be open on Thursdays for grades 3-5 and on Fridays for grades PreK-2. Gently used paperback books are sold for a quarter and hardback books for two quarters. Please only send quarters with your child to shop on these days. We will start out the year allowing each child to buy one book. This number may increase as the year goes by. We strongly encourage you to help your child create their own personal library with the books they purchase.
You may want to hang this small chart in your child’s room or somewhere where you will remember to send quarters on these dates:

SMENCILS ARE BACK!!!
We now have Sports, Frozen, Inside Out, and regular Smencils! There are a variety of scents. They are $1 each. Send money with your child to the office or stop by. HALLOWEEN SMENCILS will be available October 1st! More styles/scents to come throughout the year.
GUIDANCE NEWS
Welcome to a new school year! These first six weeks of school, Rockingham County Public Schools celebrates the Character Counts pillar of Citizenship. Good citizens do their part to make their school and community a better place. Good citizens cooperate, are respectful, and good neighbors. They obey laws/rules and also do what they can to protect the environment. Students learn in school to show citizenship-- for example, listening to the teacher and following rules, working together with classmates, cleaning up after themselves, and recycling. Citizenship also neatly dovetails with our school-wide reading strategies and focus this year on the rainforest/ ecosystem. This not only highlights science, but also how each of us is an important part, and how all of us are connected.
If you are interested in an education/ support group for parents, free classes are again being offered through Sentara RMH Family Connection at the Lucy F. Simms Center in Harrisonburg on Tuesday evenings. Activities are provided for both parents and children, and childcare and dinner are also provided! While the first day was Sept. 6, it is NOT too late to join! Please call 1-800-736-8272 to register for these FREE classes.
In Rockingham County and throughout the U. S., October has been designated as Bullying Prevention Month. While bullying is something that we are always seeking to prevent, next month there will “extra” activities taking place at Plains. You will hear more in the weeks ahead.

SCA NEWS
Our SCA student officers met on September 2 to discuss this year’s spirit days. We have planned alot of fun days! We already had our first spirit day on Friday - NFL Day. It was a huge success.
On October 13th (to correspond with Literacy Night), students will dress as their favorite book character.
Please send in Box Tops. The class which collects the most box tops will enjoy an ice cream or pizza celebration. We will start over each nine weeks.
FROM THE LIBRARIAN
Welcome to the new school year! My name is Mrs. Mawyer and I am excited to be the new Librarian here at Plains Elementary School. I look forward to getting to know all of the students and parents while encouraging the love of books for young readers.
Just as with any new school year, there are some matters that may need your attention. For example, if your child has an overdue book from last year, then they are unable to check out books until they are either returned or paid for. Please contact me if you need to discuss any issues with overdue library books.
Some important dates to mark on your calendar are November 3 – November 11, which will be the dates for our fall Book Fair. As always, we are in need of volunteers for this event. Please contact Mrs. B. or myself in the library if you are interested in being added to our volunteer schedule.

CAFETERIA NEWS
Welcome back! We are looking forward to seeing and feeding all of our new and return students this year. We also welcome parents/grandparents that would like to eat lunch with their students during the school year. However, if you plan to join your child for lunch, please let their teacher or the office know so that we can be prepared for the extra meals.
Please check backpacks to be sure that your child/children turn in their lunch money when sent. All lunch money should have the student’s name on it so that it is credited to the right account. Charge notices will be sent the first day of each week by paper or e-mail. Please pay charges in a timely manner.

HOT SOX TRYOUTS
Hot Sox tryouts will take place

look at those interested in fourth
grade, Mrs. Depoy's and Mr. Smith's
