____________________________________
Student’s Name
This handbook is intended to give parents and students a general outline of policies, activities and student responsibilities in my classroom. For additional school-wide policies and procedures, please refer to the North Bergen Parent/Student Calendar Handbook for the Elementary Schools.
INTRODUCTION
It can be said of most situations that the better informed you are, the more successful you will be. That is certainly the case in sixth grade! I am providing you with this handbook in order to make sure you are well-informed about all class rules, policies, and procedures. It is the responsibility of every student to read and understand the contents of this handbook.
ACADEMICS
CURRICULUM
The Mathematics curriculum will focus on reinforcing and mastering skills learned in previous grades. In addition, we will also introduce new skills in multiplication, decimals, fractions, geometry, statistics, Number line and algebra.
BOOKS AND SUPPLIES
Students will receive a Math textbook. This textbook should be covered at all times. Student will also receive supplemental handouts. I have included a separate supply list. Please acquire the necessary supplies by the date noted. Please note that supplies should be replenished throughout the school year as they are used up.
WHAT TO BRING (OR NOT!)
Students SHOULD bring the necessary academic supplies (notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, and books, book bags) to class everyday:
Student SHOULD NOT bring the following items to class:
Large sums of money, Toys and games of any kind, clothing that violates the dress code, cameras, cell phones or any other electronics. TEACHER IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST OR STOLEN PROPERTY!
EXTRA HELP
Extra help will be available once a week. Students will be notified what day extra help will be offered and when it will begin. Day and time are subject to change.
CLASS PARTICIPATION
Students should be prepared for class every day and actively participate during group assignments and classroom lessons. One hundred percent effort is always expected.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
Students are expected to adhere to all North Bergen School District policies and rules as well as our classroom policies and rules at all times while in school. This includes bus rides, field trips and other special events.

3. Be Trustworthy

3. Keep your hands, feet and all objects to yourself.

HOMEWORK POLICY
Grading:
I will collect and grade homework randomly. Students will receive a zero (0) for homework that is not handed in. The final homework grade will be based on the average grade for all homework collected. Homework counts as ¼ (25%) of student’s final grade.
Free Pass J
Students will have an opportunity to earn “Homework Passes” throughout the year. They can use a pass in place of completing an assignment. Homework passes cannot be used for assignments being graded.
Helpful tips for completing homework
¨ Eat a healthy snack before you start your homework.
¨ Do your homework at the same time each day.
¨ Sit in a quiet, well lit place.
¨ Call a friend if you get stuck or forget something
¨ Limit TV viewing and video games during school nights.
GRADING POLICY
REPORT CARD GRADES
The final marking period grades will be based on tests/quizzes, homework, class work and class participation. The final grade will be based on the accumulation of points. Any grade below 64 is considered a failing grade.
• Points are based on:
Ø Class work = ¼ of grade
Ø Homework = ¼ of grade
Ø Tests and Quizzes = ¼ of grade
Ø Class Participation= ¼ of grade
OTHER POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
ATTENDANCE
It is the parent’s responsibility to make sure the student is present and on time for class every day. If student is absent, it is the parent’s responsibility to inform the teacher and the school via telephone on or before the date of absence. Parents must also send a doctor’s note or a signed note of explanation in order to excuse the absence. Excused absences include illness and family emergencies. If a note is not received, the absence will be unexcused. Please remember, however, that state law limits the number of unexcused absences a student can have.
Students are responsible for making up missed homework and class assignments within five days of the absence. He/she is responsible for finding out what work was missed and complete it. I have a “while you were out” folder by my desk that students have access to. It will have all assignments and hand outs by date. If the work is not made up, the student will receive a zero (“0”) for each assignment not made up.
BATHROOM BREAKS
It is the student’s responsibility use the bathroom before arriving at school and during lunch time. If absolutely necessary, students will be allowed a bathroom break in the late morning or in the late afternoon. To request permission, student must:
- raise hand for permission
- sign-out (name and time) and take a bathroom pass
- go directly to bathroom and back
- sign back in (time) and return the bathroom pass
EARLY DISMISSAL
If a parent or guardian needs to pick up a student before 3:00 o’clock dismissal, the parent must notify the office in person and sign the log in the front desk. The office will then notify the classroom teacher that the child is leaving for the day and should be sent to the office.
PARENT CONFERENCES
If a parent/guardian would like to meet with me, please send a note with the student or call the school for an appointment. I am available every morning from 8:30-8:45. All appointments must be made in advance by calling 201-295-2900.
SAFETY
The safety of each student is my primary concern. Students should adhere to the specific rules and guidelines below to ensure their safety and the safety of others.

We will have two fire drills a month. Once you hear the fire siren, you should do the following:
1. Code “RED”: STOP whatever you are doing-and REMAIN QUIET

3. Raise your hand if your neighbor in front of you is missing and wait for teacher’s acknowledgement.
4. Follow teacher to the exit and designated area
5. Once in designated area, turn in the opposite direction and wait silently for instructions
6. When asked to return, walk back to the classroom entrance and remain quiet and in order
7. Teacher will take attendance as you reenter the classroom
8. If you are not in the classroom during a fire drill, go to the class closet to you at the time. Return to your class after the fire drill
INTRUDER DRILL
1. Code “RED”: STOP whatever you are doing-and REMAIN QUIET
2. Go to designated area AND remain quiet
3. Teacher will lock the door and join the students
4. After drill, students will go back to their seats and wait for instructions
LEAVING THE CLASSROOM
Students are not permitted out of the classroom without permission from the teacher. If permission is granted, the teacher will issue a signed pass and the student will sign out. Teachers have the authority to refuse passes to any student who abuses the privilege.
