The Director of Medical Education seeks to appoint up to 8 Clinical Teaching Fellows across Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital and Queen Elizabeth University Hospital/Royal Hospital for Children campuses for one year in the first instance from August 2018. This post is aimed at any level of trainee and 3 of these posts could be considered appropriate for out of programme experience.
The Clinical Teaching Fellow will focus on the organisation, development and provision of teaching to undergraduate medical students from Glasgow University. The successful candidate will spend up to 28 hours per week on a mixture of bedside teaching and facilitated tutorials, simulation and additionally will co-ordinate teaching by other staff. Pursuit of a qualification in medical education is encouraged and funding will be available to pursue this with Glasgow University.
This unbanded post will have up to 12 hours per week to maintain clinical practice in the majority of specialities.
The posts do not attract banding but Fellows may register with NHSGGC Doctor Bank and perform out of hours sessions at the discretion of their supervisor. The successful candidates will be offered a one year fixed term appointment, which may be extended.
You will be fully registered with the GMC with a current Licence to Practice, and must have completed Foundation training. Evidence of an interest in and an aptitude for teaching is essential and possession of a higher postgraduate qualification (eg MRCP, MRCS, FRCA) highly desirable. The posts will be part of a community of practice of Clinical Teaching Fellows in the West of Scotland.

1. Work of the Directorate
The Directorate of Medical Education within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is led by Dr Lindsay Donaldson, Director of Medical Education and has responsibility for ensuring the quality of educational practice for undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees across the Board. Within the Board’s hospitals and community environments, it trains around 75% of GlasgowUniversity medical student output and 25% of the total trainees in various specialties for Scotland.
The Directorate oversees a governance structure which includes Associate Directors of Medical Education, Simulation leads and Educators, and Hospital Sub Deans.

Title: Clinical Teaching Fellow

DUTIES OF THE POST
The Directorate of Medical Education seeks to appoint 8 enthusiastic individuals to assist in the delivery of undergraduate teaching. The posts would ideally suit any trainee and 3 of these posts will be considered for out of programme experience. The posts are for one year and contribute to a team of 9 Clinical Teaching Fellows within Medical Education in NHSGGC, one of which is a Clinical Simulation Fellow.
It is anticipated that around 7 sessions (28 hours) per week will be devoted to teaching activities (worked flexibly). A regular contribution to other teaching, including multi-disciplinary teaching will also be expected.
Allocation of site specific clinical and teaching duties will be outlined in each postholder’s job plan organised by the site Hospital Sub Dean, Associate Director of Medical Education and Simulation Lead.
Other duties may be allocated from time to time as directed by the Director of Medical Education.
For all successful applicants
Teaching
Working in association with the other Clinical Teaching Fellows and the Clinical Simulation Fellow, Director of Medical Education, Simulation leads, Associate Directors of Medical Education and Hospital Sub Deans, the postholders will contribute to the delivery of medical teaching as relevant to their previous training. They will contribute to the development of new approaches to medical teaching and to their evaluation, including simulation. They will build on work completed by previous Clinical Teaching Fellows, e.g. teaching materials.
Research
Postholders will be expected to take part in ongoing quality improvement and research activities and will be encouraged and supported in their own projects.
Personal Development
Postholders are expected to maintain and develop their clinical skills through their weekly clinical sessional commitment (specific duties will be arranged by local negotiation dependent on previous experience of the trainee and their desired clinical development). Out of hours experience may be available through NHSGGC Doctor Bank.
Appointees may enrol in the Glasgow University Health Professions Education course which has been re-drawn to accommodate online distance learning. Fellows will be expected to complete a simulation course. Full course funding for both will be available.
Postholders are expected to comply with formal supervisory and assessment processes in regard to both their clinical and teaching activities. Supervision will be jointly between the Hospital Sub Dean and Associate Director of Medical Education on each site.

3. Glasgow – a great place to live and work

4. The Hospital Modernisation Programme – The Services of Tomorrow
A massive re-organisation of NHSGGC has just been completed. The re-organisation was essential to align the organisational structure to the Acute Services Review (ASR) recommendations and support the Hospital Modernisation Programme which is transforming healthcare provision locally, regionally and nationally. More than seven hundred million pounds of investment underpins an ambitious building programme that will deliver truly world class and integrated care from the following major acute sector units;
- New Cancer Centre, PET CT Imaging Centre, opened in 2007 on the General hospital campus at Gartnavel.
- Development of a single dedicated Regional Cardiothoracic Centre at Golden Jubilee hospital completed 2008.
- Ambulatory Care, Diagnostic and Treatment Centres at the Stobhill and Victoria sites, completed June 2009.
- QueenElizabethUniversityHospital with co-location of Maternity, Children’s and AdultHospital services. Regional Neurosciences and Maxillofacial Centres are also on site. Completed in 2015.
- Re-development of Glasgow Royal Infirmary into the second major acute hospital from 2015.
The purpose designed facilities will enable the one-stop/rapid diagnosis and treatment models required for the future.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.
TYPE OF CONTRACT / Fixed TermGRADE AND SALARY / Clinical Teaching Fellow
£ 31,220- £ 49,091 per annum (pro rata)
New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
HOURS OF DUTY / Full Time 40.00
SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via:
REMOVAL EXPENSES / Assistance with removal and associated expenses may be given and would be discussed and agreed prior to appointment.
EXPENSES OF CANDIDATES FOR APPOINTMENT / Candidates who are requested to attend an interview will be given assistance with appropriate travelling expenses. Re-imbursement shall not normally be made to employees who withdraw their application or refuse an offer of appointment.
