Perry Central Rolls Out 1:1
Having one computer for each student (1:1) means more than just the purchase of computers; it means that Perry Central is committed to doing whatever it takes to keep our school on the cutting edge. These are exciting times in education, and Perry Central is committed to providing the best possible education for our students. In today’s rapidly changing world technology plays a major role in preparing students for the dynamic world of the 21st century. The Perry Central School Board voted April 23, 2012 to purchase 650 laptop computers, launching Perry Central into a new era of instructional delivery. On the first day of the 2012-2013 school year, each 5th through 12th grader at Perry Central will be issued a laptop computer. Fifth graders will be issued “mini” laptops that have been in use at PC, while 6th through 12th graders will be issued new HP laptops.
Evolution
Until now students relied on stationary or mobile computer labs, with a school-wide ratio of about 4 students per computer. By moving to 1:1 the use of technology can be greatly enhanced. Teachers and students are already accustomed to utilizing computers for production, research, on-line classes, and more. This bold move allows us to take it to the next level. Existing desktop computers and mobile labs will be moved to grades kindergarten through fourth grade to increase their exposure to technology. We realize that to prepare our students for the 21st century, we need to continually be moving forward, which includes both the inclusion of more technology, as well as methodology that is representative of the skill set needed in our changing world.
Inclusion
One important reason for the move is that we want to be sure that ALL students have access to technology. Every student who graduates from PC will have the same experiences using technology as a powerful tool and resource. We understand that to prepare students for the next phase of their lives, they need to be utilizing the tools on a daily basis that they will utilize as they pursue higher education and enter the workforce.
Infrastructure
The wireless infrastructure at PC is being upgraded so that computer usage is maximized. There will be wireless access for students and staff throughout the entire building, and we are increasing bandwidth. We realize that for the project to be successful, it is important that Internet access and speed be maximized.
Safety and Security
Student safety is always our number one priority. We utilize Lightspeed, a filtering software that helps us manage inappropriate content. There is a delicate balance between having the system “open” enough to allow students to fully utilize available resources and “closed” enough to block inappropriate content. No system can do the job of caring, involved adults, so we will rely on teachers and parents to help us manage the content students are accessing.
Funding
Although school funding is a critical point, our students’ long-term success must guide our decisions. Sound fiscal management over the years has allowed Perry Central to establish a Rainy Day Fund, which will partially fund the initial purchase. A technology loan, which will be paid back through Capital Projects Funds and book rental fees, will also be used. We do not want to put a burden on families and will make every effort to keep book rental costs as low as possible.
Parents have entrusted their children with us, and we will work diligently to do all we can to provide students with the education that they deserve.
